September Empties + How I Pick My Favorites

I’m currently on a beauty no buy, so I’ve started blowing through a lot of my skincare products! In September, along with my Pixi Glow Tonic, I finished my Missha All Around Safe Block Essence Sun, the Glossier Priming Moisturizer (which I mini reviewed inside of my PM Rich Review), and my Julep Night Shift Sleeping Mask. If you’ve been reading my blog long enough, you’ll know I’ve loved all of these products for a while (save the Missha sunblock which I purchased in January of this year), so I’ll link to the full reviews! However, what makes an empty so good that you literally have to finish it? Let me tell you how I pick my favorites.

Beauty is all about choices. I think there's a lot of things that are complicated in a sunscreen and there are a lot of options out there. That said, I don't feel comfy promoting a sunscreen that, in my opinion, is average at best. I don't dislike it, but the price for its size is not budget friendly (and at the high end of a mid-range brand), and other sunscreens do the same things the @glossier Invisible Shield does. Of course there are differences as well, but not enough I think to justify buying it. I don't want the rep program to get a bad name for pushing a product "just for sales" but instead be completely honest about how I feel about ANY product I recieve. Instead, if you'd like a budget and black girl friendly sunscreen, I recommend the @misshaus All Around Safe Block. ☆1.7 oz for $8-$14 (depends where you get it) ☆No white cast ☆Take a minute to fully sink in but once it does, it's not sticky or oily. ☆SPF 45 & Water Resistant • • • • #sunscreen #spf #summer #summer17 #glossier #glossierrep #teenbloggers #blackbloggers #studentbloggers #beautybloggers #bbloggers #instabeauty #instagrambeauty #skin #skincare #skincarejunkie #kbeauty #koreanbeauty #aesthetic #photography #sunshine #discoverunder1k #discoverunder5k #atlantabloggers #georgiabloggers

Price

If the price of a product is such that I can repurchase it without feeling like it’s going to leave a dent in my pocket, it’s a good indicator that the product could become a favorite. As a college student, I don’t have a lot of disposable income, so for me, to get a full sized sunscreen that I can wear every day without worrying about it running out AN having it last about 9 months for only $10 is perfect.

Did It Work?

I think in the beauty world especially, we’re always so ready for the next big thing to try that we don’t stick with anything long enough to see if it really works for us. Skincare has always been YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), and what may work for my skin may not work for your skin. This is why patch testing is very important, and just listening to your skin overall. Products that do what they claim in an easy way, often reach my favorites list.

A few other things come into play including accessibility and packaging, but these two things push a product up to the top of my favorites list and subsequently, my empties list, very quickly. I think it’s this type of thinking that helps me get through no buys, and also the reason I REALLY love Beauty Award spreads in magazines, because you really get to see it all laid out in the most beautiful way possible. I may do my own Best in Beauty Awards this year. 😉

What are some of your favorite repeat buys? Let me know in the comments, and I’ll see you next week!

Product Review: Glossier Body Hero

Heyyyy everyone! I feel like it’s been so long since I did an honest to god product review, but Glossier has got me on lock with these monthly launches! This month’s launch they started Phase 3 of their line, which is body products. The Body Hero campaign was beautiful, showcasing women of different colors and body types which I LOVED. It was an interesting move for them, and I’m excited to see where else it’ll go. Let’s get started!

As I detailed in my preview post, the Glossier Body Hero Duo consists of the Daily Oil Wash ($18) and the Daily Perfecting Cream ($22). They’re both scented with Orange Blossom Neroli which is how one of my childhood vacation bible schools smelled like (weird I know) so I enjoyed a bit of nostalgia while using these.

Product Review: Glossier Body Hero

Body Hero Daily Oil Wash

I swap out my shower regimen fairly often because I use products up a lot faster than I do other beauty products. I was in the middle of a bar of goat’s milk soap my aunt gifted me, so I was happy to try out something a little different. My only experience with body oil is the baby oil my mom used to slather on me when I was a kid, but this wasn’t like that (exactly). It doesn’t foam, even with a washcloth, which is a little annoying. It “froths” instead which is more like teeny tiny bubbles. Bubbles make me feel squeaky clean, but I don’t think that was the idea with Body Hero. However, if you’re not big on bubbles, you’ll probably like this! One of my favorite ways to use the oil is to exfoliate first (I’m using the Lush Scrubee bar right now) and then follow up with the oil. My skin feels really silky smooth after!

My biggest qualm with the oil is that you have to use a LOT. I feel like I’m using 5-6 pumps to adequately cover and clean my whole body which means this isn’t going to last very long if I use it on the regular. This is something you should keep in mind going forward because although it’s a big bottle for $18, paying $18 over and over isn’t the most cost-effective. If this is a luxury purchase for you, then you should certainly move ahead! Or, you can purchase the duo and save a bit of money that way.

Body Hero Daily Perfecting Cream

This cream is perfect for the fall months when the weather starts to change and so does your skin! A lot of Glossier’s products are very light, but this cream is definitely a heavy body cream which is going to be great for winter for my eczema chapped skin! It comes out of the bottle white, but on deep skin is has a very distinct light pink tint until you rub it into the skin. It’s not sticky and absorbs quickly, leaving a light sheen over the skin that’s comparable to the sheen in Birthday Balm Dotcom. It’s subtle, but noticeable which I love. Plus, it lasts ALL DAY LONG. I put it on in the mornings after a shower usually around 8:30-9 am, and I like to wear shorts in the Georgia heat, but it doesn’t sweat off or anything. It just shines! I don’t get ashy, and my legs look just as good at 5 pm as they did when I left my dorm.

My biggest qualm with the cream is that if you rub it in too much it starts to pill. They easily brush off, but that seems to be a problem with the formulation. I also have little bumps pop up around my knees for about an hour after application. They don’t hurt or itch, and I think it may have something to do with my eczema (that’s where it normally flares up), but I felt it should be included in this review.

All in all, I highly recommend the cream for everyone and the oil for someone who wants a special shower treat if they don’t have a bathtub (I miss my Lush bath bombs lol). Don’t forget you can get the Body Hero duo together for $35 and for 20% off if you shop through my rep link. Big thanks to everyone who shopped with me this month. You help make these reviews possible!

What’re your favorite bath/shower products? Let me know in the comments, and I’ll see you next week!

Glossier’s Body Hero Duo Is Here

Glossier's Body Hero Duo is Here

Welcome back ladies and gents! Yesterday, Glossier began Phase 3 of their product line, Body Hero, which contains the Daily Oil Wash and the Daily Perfecting Cream.I’m super into this duo for two reasons. First, I’m a college kid with no bathtub, and I can’t bask in the wonder that are my Lush bath bombs anymore, so this is making me feel pretty good about showering and relaxing. Secondly, I have eczema and it’s really hard to find products that are moisturizing but don’t smell like a hospital. Glossier really managed to find that perfect mix and I’m in love with it.

Related: Glossier Phase 2 Review

The Daily Perfecting Cream is $22 and the Daily Oil Wash is $18, but together the duo is $35 and ships free! Plus, if you’re new to the Glossier crew, you can use my link for 20% off your first order bringing the total down to $28 (and it still ships free!).

One more thing before I go! Priming Moisturizer is now $22 instead of $25 and the Phase 1 set’s price has been lowered to $40! Now you can start with the brand’s basics without shelling out as much money!

I’ll have a full review up of the duo soon, but until then take it easy!

Product Review: Glossier Wowder For Dark Skin

Hey, everyone! Sorry for the delay in posts, but if you’ve been following me on literally any of my socials (@thechicmachine) then you’d know I finally moved into COLLEGE! Yes, siree I’m officially a Georgia State Panther and I’ve been exploring campus and all it has to offer. The transition has been great, I’ve met a lot of cool people, and my classes aren’t terrible which is always a plus. One of the things about living on campus in a metro area like Atlanta is that there is a lot of walking involved. Great for my calves, not so great for my makeup. I have combo oily skin with most of the oiliness occurring in my T-Zone, and this is extra sucky with the Georgia humidity. Thankfully, Glossier has released another product designed for those not 100% on board with their “ultra dewy” messaging! Wowder is a translucent powder in three shades designed to mattify and decrease shine on days when dewy is not on the memo.

Product Review: Glossier Wowder For Dark Skin

I received Wowder in the shade Dark/Deep which is my corresponding shade in Perfecting Skin Tint and Stretch Concealer. I’ve never used another translucent powder, but I have used the Covergirl Clean Matte Pressed Powder so that’s what I compared this to. For a good frame of reference, the first several times I used Wowder, I did not use my Urban Decay setting spray to see how well it worked on its own. The first time I wore Wowder, I put it on my whole face. Now my cheeks and chin are not oily and can verge on dry from time to time, so this did not sit well. It clung to my dry patches a bit so I didn’t like that at all!

On the other hand, on my t-zone it worked very well. It didn’t sit on the top of my skin as a pigment like the Covergirl pressed powder, but almost melted into a cream like consistency after application. It didn’t make my skin look overly pale, and made it look matte but not dried out. The wear time on my forehead was about 8 hours, but on my nose, it wa only about 4. What can I say? I’m hella oily!

Product Review: Glossier Wowder For Dark Skin

The Wowder brush was a totally different story! It’s smaller than my Real Techniques powder brush and more angled so I could get spots like under my eyes and on the sides of my nose. As for the trampoline mesh, I think it’s helpful to an extent, but it’s actually harder to get out the amount I need sometimes.

For $35, it’s a great value. You get a brush that you can use with other products and a .25 oz powder that works well with oily skin and has a natural finish when used correctly. If you think you’ve gotten the wrong shade you can always exchange it for free, and the duo ships free! Wowder by itself is $22 USD and the brush alone is $20.

Remember you can get 20% off of your purchase with my referral link which puts the duo at $28! Leave me a comment below about your oily or dry skin nightmares! Have an awesome week!

Glossier Wowder Is Here

Good news for all of my Glossier fans out there! It’s LAUNCH DAY! Today, Glossier has dropped the latest in its line of makeup, Wowder. Now, all the marketing talking about “It’s not a powder. It’s Wowder.” is a little cheesy, I’ll admit. However, as a person with combo oily skin, all of Glossier’s products do not work for my skin as they adhere strictly to their “dewy” look (talking about you PM Rich!). SO I’m very excited to try a powder that can possibly control this oil on my face! I currently use the Covergirl Clean Matte Pressed Powder, and I’ll have a comparison review up after I’ve had some time to test it out more thoroughly.

I was always skeptical of loose, translucent type powders because they always look so white in the pan, but Wowder comes in 3 different shades! Plus, Jackie Aina already put up her review of it, so I know this is coins well spent! Wowder costs $22 USD ($27 CAD) by itself for the inevitable restock, BUT you can get a Wowder/Brush combo for $35 USD ($45 CAD) which saves you $7 than if you bought the brush and Wowder separately. If you don’t need another powder (and let’s be honest with ourselves here) but you want to give the brush a go, it is $20 USD ($25 CAD). Now for me, that’s a lot for a brush, and I’ll also be comparing this brush to my Real Techniques powder brush in the near future.

Are you a first time Glossier customer? Well, you’re in luck! Shop with my link and get 20% off and EVERYONE gets free shipping with the Wowder Duo! That’s $28 USD ($36 CAD) for the duo, $17.60 USD ($21.60 CAD) for just the Wowder, and $16 USD ($20 CAD) for just the brush! So what are you waiting on??

Happy shopping!

June Makeup & Skincare Empties 2017

June Makeup & Skincare Empties

A few months ago, I tried examining my spending and beauty habits. While I did spend less money than I normally do, I still found it difficult to completely refrain from purchasing anything. Since then, I’ve made it my goal to finish some of the beauty and skincare products I already have! This month, I have a lot more empties than I normally do, so I figured I do a whole post about it.  Original reviews of the products are linked so you can see how I felt about them when I first got them versus now!

Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser

This is my third bottle of this cleanser that I’ve been through, and while it’s very gentle and calming on my skin, especially when my skin is irritated, it doesn’t do much for controlling my natural oils. For this reason, I’m going to experiment with some other cleansers starting with the Biore Baking Soda Foaming Cleanser. I’ll have to do a full review later, but I think that the Biore cleanser is irritating my skin AND not helping my oily skin over the last 3 or so weeks, so it’s probably getting returned soon (READ: Reasons I love Ulta’s return policy).

Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask

This mask is pretty much my holy grail sleeping mask right now. I like my Julep Night Shift mask for the winter because it’s a bit heavier, but the Moon Mask is just the right consistency. The Glossier Priming Moisturizer Rich is way too heavy and oily for my skin now, in the middle of the summer than it was back in January, and the lavender scent isn’t my favorite thing in the world, but I’m trying to empty it before I break into my new Moon Mask.

Glossier Boy Brow in Black

I’ve already waxed poetic about this stuff time and time again, so I’ll leave the link above, and just letting you know that this is my 8th (I think) bottle of BB, not counting Clear if that’s any indication of how good this stuff is.

Olay Ultra Moisture Body Wash

I received this gel in my April ONYX box, bit I think this shower gel wasn’t anything too special. It was moisturizing, but I put lotion on after the shower anyway, so I don’t feel the need to have an overly moisturizing shower gel. I’m more into how stuff smells, so I wasn’t sad when this was gone.

Bath and Body Works Vanilla Bean Noel Body Lotion

This is my favorite scent from BBW that you can currently buy. I know it’s a seasonal Christmas scent, so I tend to buy 2 or 3 bottles during the Semi-Annual Sale, and just use that year round until it’s Christmas time again. Going through any big bottle of lotion is feat so I’m patting myself on the back for this one. That being said, I REALLY wish that they would bring back the Lemon Vanilla scents. If they did, I’d toss this in a heartbeat lol. Your Limoncello fave could NEVER.

& Other Stories Lemon Daydream Body Lotion

This is a sample of lotion I got with my recent & Other Stories purchase that I was finally getting around to using. It was a decent sized packet, and I was able to get both of my legs, feet, and arms with it so that’s good. It also was fairly moisturizing, more like a cream than a lotion, but not a body butter. As mentioned above, I’ve been trying to find a replacement for the BBW Lemon Vanilla ever since it was discontinued, but this is not it. It has more of a dirty, earthy scent mixed in with the lemons. I wouldn’t purchase the full size.

So there you have my June empties! Here’s hoping I have more empties to report on as I slowly declutter my stash. If you want to see more of my empties mini reviews, check out my Instagram, @thechicmachine! Also, don’t forget you can grab any Glossier goodies in this post for 20% off if it’s your first purchase! If not, I’d love for you guys to keep shopping with me, and I appreciate it if you already have! For my American readers, Happy 4th of July. Here’s hoping we make it out of this national clusterf— alive! To everyone else, we’ll be quite and hungover tomorrow! See you soon!

Glossier Invisible Shield Sunscreen SPF 35 First Impressions

Hey y’all! Happy hump day! I’m going to keep this short, sweet, and to the point. I received the Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35 sunscreen a week ago and I’ve had a chance to test it early and give you the DL on it.

Packaging

The packaging, as with most G products, it very nice. It’s a yellow and white container, which is a refreshing move from the normal millennial pink. The box it comes in is a see through peach which is also a nice summer color. The box is made of the same plastic material that earbuds come in, and I’ve accidentally torn the opening flap. The pump works much better than the Glossier Milky Jelly pump! Equal product for all!

Product

This is a clear, chemical serum sunscreen! It leaves NO white cast whatsoever. Big bonus in the Black Girl Friendly category. It smells like lemons which is a plus because I love citrus scents! It sinks into my skin very quickly (about 10-15 seconds) and a little bit of product goes a long way. The formula dries a little matte, which isn’t my favorite thing, but when I apply makeup after, it’s not a big deal.

Value

This thing is $34. I’m not gonna lie. That’s WAY too much for what it is. There’s only 1 ounce of product, and it’s an average sunscreen at best. Once I use it a little longer, I’ll be able to fully compare it to the Missha sunblock that I’ve already used half a bottle of. That said, I’m not seriously overwhelmed by it. However, if it plants the idea in your head that you should be using sunscreen EVERY DAY, then I guess it’s worth it? But I don’t feel super comfy pushing it on yall because I don’t think it’s as revolutionary as they’re saying it is. It’s all about the exact ingredients you want in your routine I suppose, but I have fairly good skin that isn’t super sensetive, so I’m not very discretionary about many ingredients.

If you decide to purchase, remember that ANYONE can use my link, and not just new shoppers. Everyone gets free shipping at $30 and with the 20% off, the sunscreen comes down to $27.20.

Here are more of my Glossier Reviews!

Glossier Super Serums Update

Hey, all! I’m so happy that it’s finally warming up around here! I decided that now would be a great time to give you an update on the Glossier Super Serums! I’ve had them for almost 6 full months now (My 1st review was after a month!), so I feel like I can speak on the long term results a bit better.

Super Bounce

Super Bounce is now my favorite serum out of the three. It’s a hyaluronic acid serum when aids the skin in looking plump and refreshed right after applying! I already have chubby cheeks, so plumpness isn’t an issue! However, I genuinely feel like my skin has become more moisturized in the last several months than ever! Even when I’m not wearing makeup, I feel like my skin is refreshed and healthy.

Super Pure

In my last post, I noticed a small outbreak of bumps on my face after I started using Super Pure, so I discontinued use. I looked into the ingredients, and this is a Zinc and Niacinamide serum. Niacinamide helps soothe acne and bumps while Zinc helps with sebum (oil) overproduction and cell turnover. What my face likely was going through was a “skin purge”. My glands were pushing all of the nasty stuff out and shortly after I went through the process again, my skin settled! This took about 2 weeks, but you know your skin best, and if you begin getting blemishes in places you normally don’t, it itches or hurts, you should probably stop using it. After a couple months of consistent use, I can say that my acne and bump production has gone from blessedly low to almost nonexistent!

Super Glow

I’ve never really had a problem with dull skin, so I don’t use Super Glow as much as the other two. However, I do believe that my skin looks less dry and more “glowy” when I use it a couple days in a row. Just make sure that when you wear this, you also wear sunscreen! It’s a vitamin C serum when can make skin extra sensitive to the sun’s UV rays! I use Missha’s All Around Safe Block Essence Sun SPF 45 because it has no white cast! But as many of you know, a Glossier SPF is in the works…

Don’t forget you can buy each of the Supers individually for $28 or buy the Super Pack for $65! That’ll get you free shipping, plus you’re saving $19 than if you bought them all individually! And if you’re purchasing Glossier for the 1st time, be sure to use my rep link for 20% off! Thank you to everyone who has shopped with me so far!

Happy Friday!

-Dymond M. <3
