Mothers Day Gift Ideas

OMG I was sooo cah-ute! Love ya momma!
OMG I was sooo cah-ute!
Love ya momma!

Hey guys! Today I shall jump right in with no preamble because this is important! For anybody that may have forgotten, Mother’s Day is tomorrow, Sunday May 11. I had actually forgotten til like Tuesday of this week, and I started freaking about what I was going to get her! I have since decided on her gift, but for anyone who hasn’t, here’s a list of gift ideas that I’ve found, and some codes and coupons that will help alleviate the cost, so you can get the most for her, without breaking the bank.

1) A FREE Julep Maven box

Free is a very good word don’t you think? I’ve already elaborated on the greatness of the Julep Maven box here, so I won’t go into much detail. I’m happy to let you know that using my unique referral link, you can get your first Maven box free! Just click here, take the style quiz, and enter your email. You’ll be emailed the code for your free box!

Okay so if you haven’t heard yet, Oprah has worked with Starbucks to produce a new drink called the Tevana Oprah Chai Tea. And in true Oprah style, your mom can get one FREE! Just take her into Starbucks on May 11, and when you buy the new drink, she gets one free! I like chai, so I’ll be taking my mom to hang out there after church Sunday for sure!

3)A New Perfume

I for one love fragrances, and even the least girly of all mother’s should have a signature scent as well. So look no further than your local Walgreens. Today is their Saturdate where you can get $10 off of select fragrances with your Walgreens Balance card. Be careful though. It may not be at your store, so check their website to find out.

These are just a few ideas that I had, but every mom is different. So just make sure you give her all of your love, and that’s the greatest gift you could give her. BTW, check out my mom’s super cool website here. I’m super proud of her for getting it off the ground, and she’s an inspiration to me everyday.

I’ll see you chicas and chicos next week!

Barbie Cakes

So as a teen, I am pretty much in love with with my fridge. Not saying that all teenagers are required to worship food, but I’m very content to sit on my couch munching on the Little Debbie version of Rice Krispies treats  while watching Supernatural. I’m not much into the marketing and whatnot for various junk foods (i.e. Chester the Cheetah, the Trix rabbit)because I find them cheesy and for the little kids.I just want it to taste good. So imagine my surprise when, browsing through Pinterest, I saw the most gorgeous cake ever. And it was Barbie. In a couture ballgown. Let me say this: I have never ever liked Barbie dolls. Ever. My mom said I used to throw them in the trash when she wasn’t looking. That said, this may be the closest I’ve been to liking a Barbie doll. I didn’t even care what flavor it was! I wanted to eat it because it was just so gorgeous.

Further investigation revealed that each confection was based off of the designs of Charles James, also known as America’s first couturier. His dresses were always well cut and draped, and flowed like water. I think it’s great that these bakers were allowed to pay homage to one of the greatest designers in American history.

So enjoy the eye feast! And if you’re feeling hungry, I suggest the Publix strawberry cake with buttercream icing. Delish!

Chillin' Like a Villain

Okay, so I know that last week, I was complaining about the persistent rain. Well now I wish I had some! It’s is just so. Freaking. Hot. I mean it’s only 85, and that’s not hot to some people. But it snowed not once, but TWICE down here in the ATL. A southern beauty like myself is not used to that. So there I was, sitting in the sweltering heat in front of a super packed Starbucks sipping on a strawberry Frapp when all of a sudden, the fashion goddesses rained the perfect outfit in front of my eyes. I don’t know who she was, but she was dressed to kill. The heat didn’t dampen her mood one bit obviously. Black leather shorts, a ripped band tee (I think it was the Rolling Stones), and killer white pumps with cherry print. Whoever this fabulous chica was, kudos! It got me to thinking. Why shouldn’t I ditch the basic florals and pastels of spring? I needed my inner #GIRLBOSS to come out! Heat or no heat! So I was inspired.

Not only was I inspired by the real life #GIRLBOSS, Sophia Amoruso, founder and CEO of Nasty Gal clothing, but  I was also thinking about Cruella DeVill when I made this(Killing puppies besides, that woman had it goin’ on!). Leather can add instant edge to any outfit. If you’re worried about sweating in them, substitute regular black jean shorts. Cheetah print is also very tough in my opinion. Go sky high with a pair of heels or booties and stomp down that imaginary runway like you OWN it. Compliment the ensemble with gold bangles and a super bold red lip.

That’s all I have for this week. Send me some pics of your fabulous outfits! Best one will be featured on a future post of TCM and on my Twitter page. Also, make sure you guys preorder your copy of #GIRLBOSS by none other than Sophia A. herself. If you preorder on Amazon before May 6, you’ll only pay $20.45 for your copy! I know I’m ready! How about you?

Many kisses,

From Rainy to Rainbow!

So we’ve made it midway through April. For most of us, the heat has finally made it’s way to us! That said, April showers brings May flowers. It seems like it refuses to stop raining! It’s messing up hair, drenching perfectly synchronized outfits, and worst of all, sinking those brand new Louis Vuttion  heels you worked SO hard to pay for in the mud! What’s a girl(or super fabulous guy) to do? The answer is to bring the sunshine all by themselves!

rainy days

When it’s gloomy, we all want a little sun in our life! You can do this by wearing bright, neon colored boots, and trench coats to keep out the wet, but look stylish at the same time. Stay away from patterns if you plan on wearing multiple colors, or wear one patterned item, and keep the rest in neutral tones. Get a pair of monogrammed boots for a personal touch. Keep it springy with flower shaped accessories.Do a bold eye too! The power is yours! You decide how much(or little) sun you get. It will keep you going until the real rays come back! Finish it off with a cute umbrella!

Stay dry!

Music Feature: Rixton

I was browsing through the music channels as per usual when I stumbled across British pop/rock/R&B band Rixton. The band consists of lead singer Jake Roche, bassist/keyboardist and background vocalist Danny Wilkin, lead guitarist and background vocalist Charley Bagnall, and drummer Lewi Morgan. Their hit single Me and My Broken Heart has been on repeat on my Spotify playlists since I first heard it! The boys started out on Youtube(where else?) covering popular artists including Taylor Swift, R Kelly, and Maroon 5. Now they’re beginning their ascent to the top, and I for one can’t wait to watch them get there.Rixton currently has a four track EP for sale on iTunes for a little over $3.  Their upcoming full length album, also named Me and My Broken Heart, is available for pre-order on iTunes, and it will be available on July 20th.

I want to take a moment to congratulate the winner of my Twitter follower contest, @StylishGeek! She’s won a brand new Julep Maven blush in Petal Pink! If you want in on exclusive contests and giveaways, follow me on Twitter @thechicmachine!

Musically yours,

Spring Style

Hey guys! Welcome back to The Chic Machine! Spring has finally arrived! The sun is out, flowers are blooming and all of it  adds up to the wonder that is spring style. Everyone has their own personal style, but today I’m honing in on the spring trend of pastels.  Pastels are bright creamy colors that remind me of all the plants blooming around my house. A girl I think represents this style perfectly is reader Kathleen C.

Kathleen chose the fruity pastel of peach, wearing a creme tank and a sheer peach top paired with the classic blue jeans and some studded, tan combat boots from rue21.  Def perfect for a school soccer game or a night out with friends! The outfit can be recreated with different hues like lavender and robin’s egg blue. I hope you all are enjoying your spring! Until next time,

One of the latest and greatest way to clean your closet and make a little cash is through consignment shops! But who wants the hassle of going all the way to the store to sell things that may not even be bought? That’s where e-consignment comes in! E-consignment are websites and apps that offer to buy your clothes from you or to have you list and sell them yourself. Bonus:You keep most of the cash! These are 3 self-tested and reliable sites/apps that will definitely give you ways to earn some cash to buy some new duds.

1) Twice

The Twice E-Consignment shop is a straightforward and quick way to buy and sell old name brand clothing. The buying part of the site works just like any other online shop. You can filter your searches by type, brand, color, size, etc.  Shipping is a $5 flat rate for orders underneath $49. After that, it’s free to ship! To sell your clothes, you can either request a shipping label, print it off, and put it on whatever you send your items in, or have them send you a packing bag free of charge. They’ll send you an offer in about 1-2 weeks. Twice does have an acceptable brands list, so before you send anything off, make sure to check the list.

ThredUP is much like Twice, but more upscale brands are accepted, and also children’s clothing is accepted. Shipping is $2.99 for the first item and 99 cents for each additional item.Orders over $50 ship free of charge. Unlike Twice, more accessories are accepted than just handbags. All in all, ThredUP is for those of us with a bit more money in the budget.

Vinted is a consignment with a lot more free reign than both Twice and ThredUP. For one thing, you can sell whatever you want.It doesn’t matter what brand, size,or anything like that. Also, you get to set the price yourself, and a price gauge will show you how much you will earn after shipping costs and Vinted’s percentage.  What makes Vinted so unique is the buyer to seller experience. For example, if you see a top you really like, you can click “I Want It” and begin a conversation with the seller of the top. You can iron out any wrinkles in the transaction, request pictures of different angles of the garment and so on. Shipping ranges from about $2.80 to 6 or 7 dollars from what I’ve seen. Vinted also allows you to swap clothes and accessories, and this is also where the buyer-seller chats can come in handy.

All three of these shops also have apps to do your shopping/uploading on the go. ThredUp and Vinted are available on the Google Play store and all three are on the Apple App Store. Happy shopping!

4 Things to Do with Your BFFs for V-Day

In just 3 shorts days comes upon us the day of love! All the couples exchanging gifts, the rom-coms hitting theaters, and the overall abundance of love all around is absolutely wonderful! Sadly, some of us are single (including me!)Whether we want to be or not, a guy is not needed to enjoy V-Day! In fact, you can have the most fun on Valentine’s with your closest friends instead! Here are 4 things to do with friends on Valentine’s day!

1. Spa Day

A spa day is perfect for showing how much you love yourself and your girls! Go out to a day spa, and get relaxing! Or if you don’t have one in your area, an at home spa works just as well.

2.Movie Night

Have your friends bring over their favorite flicks whether comedy, thriller, or even musical! Order a pizza and chill with the girls at home!

3. Roller Skating

Now you may think this is just for little kids, but roller skating is a great time! The music is always pumping, and you’ll have a great laugh watching your buds flail around.

4. Closet Swap

Nothing says I love you more than sharing your clothing with your besties right? Tell your friends to bring over some clothes, shoes, and accessories in good condition, but ones that they haven’t really worn or cared about for the last few months. Then exchange! It’s an easy way to amp up your wardrobe without breaking the bank. Just take good care of the clothes you borrow, so you can return them full of the love of a friend!

Beauty boxes are slowly but surely becoming all the rage. Who wouldn’t want the latest and greatest beauty products mailed right to your door? With all the boxes out there, it’s hard to choose one. Today I’m featuring two beauty boxes that I both think are great buys, depending on what you’re looking for. So, in the blue corner, created by Jane Park is the Julep Maven Beauty Box! In the red corner, created by Lisa Sugar, is the POPSUGAR Must Have Box!

1) Price

For me, my budget is the biggest piece in my decision to buy clothing and beauty items. The Julep Maven program offers a monthly subscription of $19.99, 3 months for $60, 6 months for $120, and one year for $240. You also get free shipping and 20% off the entire Julep website for the duration of your subscription. The POPSUGAR box offers a monthly subscription of $39.95, 3 months for $110, 6 months for $215, and one year for $430. Overall, the Maven program is better for a budget babe, whereas the POPSUGAR box is better for a splurge-y kind of girl!

The content of the Julep Maven box is full of nail colors and innovative beauty products all set to a specific monthly theme. When beginning your Maven subscription, you take a “Style Profile” quiz to decide what kind of box you receive each month. The five types you could receive are:

1) Classic with a Twist- Receives 2 unique nail colors and one full-sized beauty product

2) Boho Glam- Receives 2 unique nail colors and one full-sized beauty product

3) Modern Beauty- Receives 2 full-sized beauty beauty products

4) Bombshell- Receives 2 unique nail colors and one full-sized beauty product

5) It Girl- Receives 3 unique nail colors

The POPSUGAR box is more widespread in its offerings. The box usually features a full-sized fashion, beauty, home, fitness, or even food product that has been hand-picked by the editors each month. However, everyone receives the same box each month.

3) Rewards Programs

Now if you’re going to pay for these magnificent boxes, you want to be rewarded for it, no? Thought so. Now the Julep Maven Reward’s Program runs through a points system called Earn On. You earn points, called Jules, for doing certain things in the Maven program. For example, for each box you pre-pay for, you receive 300 Jules. You also receive 1,000 Jules fro referring a friend to the Maven program! You can use the points to buy items around the site such as add-ons for your box, single beauty products, or even a free month of Julep Maven! See the full rewards conditions here.

The POPSUGAR rewards program is much less complex. It’s a simple referral system. Refer two friends, get a free month. Refer 5 friends, get three months free. Refer ten, you get six month. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

Both boxes are amazing are absolutely amazing (I’ve tested!), but it all comes down to your budget and personal style. So who do you choose? Let me know below! Until next time,

Quirk Team!

Winter blues getting you down? Good news! Spring RTW collections are here!Everyone from Betsy Johnson to Fendi has new, hot collections to share. Check them out here. Another winter problemo we fashionistas seem to be facing is running out of cute (or not-so-cute) clothes to wear that you got back in December. With your budget cut from all that New Year’s partying, finding something trendy and original to wear can seem like a hassle. Don’t worry though! Here’s a surefire way to make that outfit go from blah to AHA!

First off, just what are you planning to do with that itchy sweater Grandma made for you this year? Christmas isn’t the only time for snowflakes and reds and greens. I suggest wearing a solid colored skater skirt (black or white) with it. Then pick out your favorite color coordinating leggings and wear those too. Finish off with black flats, and you’ll come off with a quirky girl look. Since the outfit will be pretty loud, keep your makeup to a minimum.

You can also mix and match the sweater with slim-fit dark rinse or black jeans, and gold jewelry works as well! Now you’re an official member of The Quirk Team!

Lastly, I’m looking for a person to feature in my first Reader of the Week segment coming up soon. To enter, just submit a full length photo of you in your favorite outfit, and tell me why it’s your favorite outfit. Email me at Best submission will be featured in the article! I hope you all have a fabulous week!
