Product Review: Urban Decay’s Naked BB Cream

Hello, lovelies! I hope y’all enjoyed the video Saturday (lack of good lighting and all), and there will be another one up Saturday! Now today I’m writing about Urban Decay’s Naked BB Cream. I know you guys have seen me write many times about keeping a clear face and not liking foundation very much. Well, this cream has proven me wrong.

Normally I stick to just eyeshadow and lip colors because in the small town where I live, the “popular girls” have walked around with foundation, powder, and etc. caked onto their faces since they were 13. It was just unappealing to me. Fast forward a bit. Now I have horrible under eye circles due to wearing glasses for the last 8 years, and I always wished I had something to cover them up besides under eye concealers which always felt too heavy under my eyes.

Enter Urban Decay’s Naked BB Cream (Beauty Balm for those of you who don’t know). I have the self adjusting color tone and it just blends perfectly under my eyes! I don’t use it over my whole face because I have a pretty even skin tone without it, but underneath my eyes looks absolutely spectacular! The cream smooths out any lines and blends the color with the rest of my face. It didn’t melt off even on a boat ride where water constantly splashed on my face.

My only issue with it is probably the price point. I bought it for $17 during one of Ulta’s sales, but it’s normally $34 for a tube that’s not so big, and I can get good foundation for that price. However, I’d find it to be a nice splurge buy when you want to give yourself something nice. I bought the illuminating style, but they also have a bronzing style if you’re into that. I hope y’all have a great rest of the week! See you soon!

Product Review: Rimmel London’s Scandal Eyes Shadow Stick

So I LOVE playing around with my eye makeup. I love having my eyes POP with extreme color, or look kinda sultry with a smokey eye. So it’s no guess why I love playing with eyeshadow. However, some of my favorite colors are in my largest palettes, so it’s not easy to carry around. Enter Rimmel London’s Scandal Eyes Shadow Stick. You can find it in retail usually about $4.50, but I had a coupon from Seventeen magazine for a dollar off, so I said what the hey. Why not try it?

Rimmel London Scandal Eyes Shadow StickAs you can see, it comes in convenient, crayon-like packaging. That said, the cap is ridiculously hard to take off. Usually, after struggling for a few minutes, it pops off unexpectedly and scrapes the shadow. This is has happened so many times that so I don’t break the tip of the shadow stick off, I just wrap it in plastic wrap now.

Rimmel London Scandal Eyes Shadow StickIt has amazing pigmentation (I have it in blue and green) and jumps out at you. When I wear it, I try to keep the rest of my makeup simple. It is VERY hard to take off though. It usually takes me two makeup wipes and a face wash to get it off. It’s just so stubborn! Which is why I can’t understand why it melts and/or creases after just an hour or two. Primer helps a little, but not much.

The Final Verdict

Rimmel London’s Scandal Eyes Shadow Stick is great for a small party or a short evening outing. Special occasion makeup for sure. About worth the price tag on it. If you buy this, you best invest in some primer for it.

August Favorites

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

August was a crazy month for me! I started my sophomore year, I joined a book club, and by god was there a lot of shopping involved. So much stuff was crammed into this one month, so now I can look back and pick out my favorites of the month. I’m very picky when it comes to my favorites, so hopefully when I say I’m raving about something, you’ll know I’m being truthful and that I highly recommend it. That’s enough chit chat though so let’s get on with it.

1. The Rapture of Canaan by Sheri Reynolds

When I started English this year, we were given a list of books to choose from to read for the semester. It was a pretty long list, so I grabbed a cup of tea and scrolled through Goodreads for about an hour, surfing through synopses and reviews to help me choose one. Enter The Rapture of Canaan.  Without spoiling too much, it follows 12-year old Ninah and her life under her Grandpa Herman and the congregation of the Church of Fire and Brimstone and God’s Almighty Wind. Ridiculous right? Well, under such strict rulings as that congregation, what happens when she gets pregnant by her prayer partner? You’ll have to read to find out. I finished this book in two days. It was that good. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is highly sensitive about religion, because it does poke fun at it.

Sally Hansen Magnetic Polish in Graphite Gravity - August Favorites

2. Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Polish (in Graphite Gravity)

I LOVE painting my nails. Like on a weekly basis. I used to do it more, but school gets in the way now (sigh). However, when I have the chance to buy polish, I always do. I got a set of 3 Sally Hansen Magnetic Nail Polishes and one set of French Mani stickers and one set of the all over nail stickers for $3 because the box was broken. Really? I feel like a robbed them. Everything was in perfect condition except the box. SMH. Anyways, I’m usually kind of skeptical about special effects polishes because it never looks as good as the photos, even if I follow the instructions to a tee. Not this time. As seen by the picture above, it came out MARVELOUS! It looked cool with just the polish, but when I finished it off with my Julep Freedom Polymer Top Coat, it came of glossy with a gel finish. It’s now one of my favorites and I recommend it to all nail fanatics.

3. Garnier Clean Daily Balancing Exfoliator

I have already ranted and raved about this product here, but I felt it needed to be brought up again. I talked about this exfoliator about a week after I got it and I was seeing it’s immediate results. Now, a month into using it, I can see the long term results. My face feels lighter and fresh, my blackheads are nearly non-exsistant, and it smells AMAZING.I just think everyone should have it, or something like it.

4. Rimmel London Extra Pop Lash in Turquoise

This mascara is absolutely amazing! It defines and separates my lashes, and it’s in this gorgeous hue of blue. Most of the Rimmel products I try are good and this is no exception. The only thing is, I can’t seem to find this mascara in big box retailers anymore. Not Walmart or Target or Ulta or anywhere. The only place I could find it was on for like 10 bucks and who wants that? Thankfully, I have a Bealls Outlet store near my house, and they’re stocked up on it(for only $3)! I plan on getting the other colors of purple and green.

These are the items that REALLY stick out for me, so I’ll leave it here! I hope you all enjoyed my August Favorites and be sure to tune in next month for more.

Tutorial Time: My Bright Smoky Eye

Hey guys! Welcome back to The Chic Machine! If you were on my Instagram yesterday you may have seen a sneak peek of today’s post. I’ll be doing a picture tutorial for my Bright Smoky Eye.

You Will Need:

  • An eyeshadow brush or applicator (e.l.f. Professional Eyeshadow Brush, $1; Target)
  • An eye makeup blending brush (e.l.f. Professional Blending Eye Brush, $1: Target)
  • A silver eyeshadow
  • A black eyeshadow (e.l.f. Eyeshadow duo, $5 for set of 4;
  • Black Mascara (Rimmel London Extra WOW Lash Mascara in black, $4, Walgreens)

Follow the Steps

1: First, take the eyshadow brush and fill in the inner corner of your eye with silver eyeshadow like so. Stop in the middle of the pupil and put it on both the top and bottom lid. The silver makes your eyes look brighter and more awake!

Bright Smoky Eye Tutorial

2. Then, take the eyeshadow brush and on the upper lid, brush on the black eyeshadow. Apply over the brow bone as well to make your eyes look larger. Do NOT apply to lower lid.

Bright Smoky Eye Tutorial

3. Now take the blending brush and blend in the middle of the two colors. This is where the smoke in the smoky eye comes in! Try to pull the silver into the black, so you don’t end up looking like a raccoon. It should blend from light to dark quite easily.

Bright Smoky Eye Tutorial

4. Lastly, apply mascara to the upper and lower lashes. It also makes your eyes look larger and more fierce! The final result should look like this.

Bright Smoky Eye Tutorial

And there! Now, you have a bright smokey eye. It can be done in just a few minutes so you can go from zero to beauty hero! Like I said I’ll try to put this in video format very soon, but until then, have an awesome weekend!

What to Wear When Balancing School and a Social Life

Soooo I made it out of my 1st week of school! #BlessingsRecieved!! I am wiped out and I would love to rest but a fashionista’s work is never done. My busy schedule includes math and science homework, a car wash for my youth group, my sorta-summer job, and then the social event to end all events: a concert!

Most likely right after the first week of school, a couple parties will be going on, but juggling that part-time job, other friends, and the homework you most likely were loaded down with (or if you’re in college a sucky list of books to buy and papers soon to be due) makes you cringe. Balancing a social life while attending school is HARD. I would know. Gifted everything and an AP art class. Despite everything going on, you can’t stress! It does bad things to your hormones. Instead, look at each event as your personal runway, to work hard and play hard with confidence! Here are a few outfits I’ve styled for each occasion, with a little background info on each!

A Relaxed Social

Weekend Social Study Sesh

Studying and homework do not a have to be a stress-fest! Make it a study sesh instead! Invite all of your favorite girl (and guy) friends over to your house, order a few pizzas and crack open the books. You know what they say; Two heads are better than one! Having your friends over not only is more fun, but they can help you with concepts you’re just not getting.

A Water Social

Weekend Social: Water Sports

I’m going to be working a car wash this weekend, and I’m most definitely going to get wet! It’s like one big pool party with all of my friends (which I have no doubt someone around your place is planning)! I don’t enjoy baring too much skin, so I’ll wear cute one pieces with shorts over it! Not too shabby. And you don’t have to wear dull, solid colored flip flops either. I love the Coca Cola ones in the photo (if you didn’t know I like Coke, you haven’t been reading this blog long enough) and the blue polka dotted ones as well. Just choose ones that coordinate with the suit’s color. Grab a cute and/or quirky tote to pack your things in and you’re good to go!

Weekends are to be savored during the school year. You’ve got to make the best out of what you have. Just don’t stress out and you’ll be fine! For all my music lovers out there, this Monday, be prepared for the run down of Panic at the Disco’s The Gospel Tour! My dad so graciously surprised me with pit seats so I’ll attempt to have all the action on camera. I’m talking wardrobes, special effects, the pros and cons of buying band merchandise, appropriate concert wear by genre and much more! So tune in next week on The Chic Machine!

Keeping It Clean: My Daily Face Routine

With the back to school rush comes the day to end all days. The day that shall go down in history: Picture Day. Forget taking a bad picture. It’ll be passed down in your family for years to come. I’ve had a few crappy ones and trust me, you don’t want that. At the same time, the bright lights and flashes of the camera can wash out your face, and maximize all your facial flaws (ie large pores, greasy forehead, etc.), so it seems like you can’t avoid it without mounds of makeup on your face. Don’t get me wrong, I love makeup and all its enhancing features, but I like to keep my face clear of it and work solely on my eyes and lips. So how do I cover up? Easy. I just keep my face clean. It’s a simple as one, two, three.

1) Wash your face every day!

You can’t miss one. Don’t use soap and water because soap naturally dries itself out, and will dry your face out too. I use Clean and Clear Essentials Foaming Face Wash (Walmart, $4). It cleans my face thoroughly, smells amazing, and you can grab the toner and moisturizer to go with it it as a set.

2) Exfoliate!

Exfoliating at least twice a week gently scrubs out any built up dirt that your regular cleanser may have missed. I use Garnier Clean Balancing Daily Exfoliator for Combination Skin (Walmart, $6). My T-zone is dry but my cheeks are oily so this product really does help balance my face out, plus it makes me smell amazing. The smell lingers better than perfume! They also have formulas for dry and oily skin. Another exfoliator I can recommend is Julep’s Glycolic Hand Scrub (, $23). It smells like apricots, and even though it says it’s for your hands, it’s gentle enough to be used for your face.

3) Deep clean at least once a month.

No matter what you do, your face will accumulate a little bit of dirt over the course of time, so I try to deep clean my face at least once a month with a facial mask. I use Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque (Walmart,$3). The mask helps remove dirt, shrink my pores, and the mint smell is sooooo relaxing. It’s great for a monthly spa night!

All of these products help me keep my face clean, pores shrunk, and confidence rejuvenated. I’m 100% ready to battle the picture day beast and look good doing it! What are your favorite face cleaning products?

San Diego Chronicles: Traveling to the West Coast

Sorry the posts have been so iffy, but I’m on vacation! Can you blame me? And getting sick was not on my list of things to do this week. Luckily I’m feeling very refreshed, and very ready to share my adventures on the West Coast out in San Diego. First of all this sun! It starts off nice and a little humid and then BAM! Nonstop sunlight and heat from 11 to sundown. My hair nearly couldn’t take it. Tip: Hairspray is your best friend in Cali. Secondly, I finally discovered the food of angels, In N Out Burger.

San Diego Travel Adventure

The burger looks like the photo, the strawberry shake is to die for and the prices are life. LIFE I SAY! I really have no clue what I’m going to do when I go home because we don’t have any! 🙁 Las Vegas was fun as well. I shopped at the Fashion Show Mall, which houses one of the 4 main Topshop stores in the US. I bought a jean overall dress and a black pleather skirt. I was in style heaven. But let me set the record straight: The Strip is LONG. We made the mistake of walking HALF of it in one day (right after I’d gone to the gym that morning) and my calves were begging for mercy. It’s really long. I suggest breaking it up a few pieces at a time. And don’t go out there at night. EVER. Enough said.

The beaches in San Diego are beautiful! I had the pleasure of going to one on the little island of Coronado off the coast of San Diego. The high was only 77 so the air temp was perfect, but the water was FREEZING. I wasn’t in for long, but the sea salt got in my bangs (you can find that pic on my Instagram @thechicmachine) and made them all wavy sans NYM spray. I did a lot more shopping than I mentioned, but that’s a post all in itself (wink wink). I’m also kind of sad I missed Comic Con. I will go there before I die! Especially now that they’ve got the whole geek culture fashion show as a part of it too (Go Her Universe!!).

That’s all I’ve got for today, my faithful readers! I’d like to take the time to say RIP to my great Uncle Cliff. He was one of the most skilled men I’ve ever met.I miss him already. That said I’ll be at his funeral Monday, so no post or social media then or the day after. I love you all!

Red, White, and You: 4th of July Makeup Tutorial

Hello my lovelies! Have you all had a nice week? I know I did! I told you all last week that the late post came because I was about to be traveling the whole month of July! I’m not in California just yet, but I’m on my way. for now I’m just visiting family for the 4th of July weekend. Now having memories of about 11 of my 16 Independence Days, I will say I’ve seen some tacky with a capital T getups. Have any of you ever seen those really big guys who, instead of wearing shirts, write USA across their chests? Ick. There’s a better way and I’m here to show you how.

4th of July Makeup Tutorial

Behold a look I like to call Red, White, and You. It’s a very simple look that can be done in about 5-7 minutes. Now patience is key when attempting this look so be sure to follow every step!

  • A red lipstick, lipgloss, or lipstain (New Extraordinaire by Colour Riche from L’Oreal Paris in 304 Ruby Opera)
  • A black mascara or blue if you’d like to be daring (Covergirl Flamed Out Water Resistant Mascara in Black; $6.75- Walmart)
  • A glittery eyeliner (e.l.f. Essential Liquid Eyeliner in Gold; $1.00- Target)

1)This part is what takes the longest, but it’s important you do it just right! Line your whole upper lash line and half of your bottom lash line with the glitter eyeliner. It will be WET! If you don’t let it dry completely, the glitter will stick to your brow bone when you look up. So just close your eyes for about two minutes(less if you sit in front of a fan or something) and think about how awesome you’ll look when it dries. You’ll know it’s dry when you a)don’t feel how cold the liner is anymore or b)you feel like you have morning crust on the outer edges of your eye.

2)Take the mascara and apply two coats to the top lashes. Don’t let it dry in between coats or else it will look clumpy. Apply only one coat to the bottom lashes so they don’t look spidery.

3)Apply the red lip color all over bottom lip. Make sure to get the corners. Apply lip liner if needed.

There! You’re all done! Now I know what you’re thinking. Dymond, the 4th of July was YESTERDAY. Well, I say that this look can be used on all American holidays like Memorial Day, Veterans’ Day, 9/11, etc. You can also use it when you just want to add a little sparkle to the night. See? Problem solved.

Coca-Cola Girl For Life: A Mini Lookbook

I’m sure that I’ve previously mentioned my fondness of good food before on this blog. I’m not sure that I mentioned that my favorite drink is Coca-Cola. Don’t give me that sticky sweet Pepsi or Dr. Pepper or God-forbid those awful off-brands. I am a Coke Girl for life! That said, something unusally fun happened with Coke and I last week. Let’s set the scene shall we? I was sitting in the Kroger parking lot in sweltering heat waiting for my mother to return. Sure I could’ve gone in, but that requires walking, and I wasn’t quite fond of it at the moment so I stayed in the car. Lo and behold she finally returns with (drumroll please) a tall glass bottle of Coke just. For. ME. I was about to open it when I just happened to look down at my (gorgeous) outfit consisting of red skinnies, a black tank top, and a white jacket completed with red and white headband. I say “Hey Mom. I look like the Coke bottle, hourglass figure and all!” Of course she proceeds to snort and pinch my thigh fat (thanks mom). Then because my mom is a shutterbug, a simple comment turned into this.

Please ignore my Gawddd- awful hair (I’ve since gotten it done but still). Anyways we made a whole collage and then sent it out into the Twitter-verse for kicks and giggles. And then THIS happened.cocacola

See this is why I love Coca-Cola guys. Right here. So you see, the lesson for today is that you must dress everyday like Coca-Cola is going to reply to you on Twitter. I’m glad I did!

Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Spray Review

I have officially survived my first year of high school, and summer is finally here! The feeling summer gives me is complete euphoria! All of the hot new outfits, and ice cream (well I prefer slushies), and hot shirtless guys. One thing about living in Atlanta is that I’m landlocked!!!! No beach (unless artificial) is to be found. Now the only time I have waves worthy of the runway is if I go to the beach and dunk my head in the water. Works every time (for the guys too!). I only go to the beach once a year though. What’s a girl to do? Enter Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe hair products.

First off, let me just say I love each and every product that NYM has produced that I’ve tried, but none like this one. Pictured above is the NYM Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray. It can easily be used alone for simple beach like waves, and I do that all of the time, but when I want HUGE waves for a party that night, I have to go all out.

First I wash my hair with the Beach Babe shampoo and conditioner, then I use the texturizing creme and/or spray and blow it out with a diffusor. I swear these products are the best thing that has happened to my hair. Plus, it never leaves your hair heavy or crunchy, and it smells like the beach. Score! I’ve also tested it on my guy friends, and they love it too. Each product can be found at Ulta for $5.99 for a full-size or $2.99 for travel size, and Ulta usually runs a BOGO 50% off on NYM products so you could score big! If you still don’t believe me, look at this. My hair had been pin-straight less than an hour earlier. This works! Trust me.
