Principal's Office: Meet Faye Orlove

Those of you who have been following me on Instagram and Snapchat have seen me maxin’ and chillaxin’ all over California for the last 2 weeks. It’s been an amazing experience, and just makes me want to live out here a lot more! I had a couple things on my list to do while I’m here, and one of them was to visit the new LA art gallery/mini shop called Junior High. I found it on Instagram where the pale pink aesthetic found purchase with my often ignored girly side. Their page also features a neon purple uterus sign, Drake fan merch, and lots of pins. I got in touch with the owner and creator, Faye Orlove, and set up a meeting during my visit. I got there a little early, so I got to look around a bit. Junior High is a very cool quirky space. Currently exhibiting a collection from Girl on Girl Collective entitled FIRST KISS, there were poems, photos, and digital art adorning the room, all in a soft pink and white glow.

Faye came in with her backpack, apologized for being sweaty, and just started chatting, which was a surprise to me! She was certainly very down to earth, unloading “really aggressive looking” tampons and lunch among other things. Once she settled down, we got to talking.

D: So I think it’s really cool that you’ve managed to crowdsource an open art space with Junior High for the underrepresented artists, especially girls. About how long did it take you to put it all together?

Thanks! I actually got the space in May, and it took about a month to organize. We opened June 1. I’ve been working the business side of things since January. You know, crowdfunding, applying for grants, all that good stuff.

D: What kind of grants have you been applying for?

I actually have someone else helping me with all that. They’re making a list for me to look at. You know if we can get that government money that’d be great! Because we are a non-profit organization. Like a lot of my friends think I’m making money for this, but we’re actually not breaking even yet, we’re losing money. *laughs* But we’re almost there.

D: Yeah that’s fair. Always make the government work for you! I’m certainly enjoying the vibes out here in Cali especially here, Hollywood, LA, it’s really nice. But I’ve been around, so why put Junior High in LA? Why not a different city?

I’m completely obsessed with celebrity culture. Especially Hollywood. I like the idea of fame and being famous, especially the Kardashians!

D: *laughs* The Kardashians and I have a love/hate relationship.

That’s totally understandable!

D: Like, I admire how they basically built an empire from scratch, but sometimes they just annoy me. Kim is cool I think, but Kendall-

Yeah Kendall’s a little suspect!

D: I just got finished watching season 1 of KUWTK, and honestly young Kendall and Kylie have boosted my self esteem so much!

Yeah they were crazy. And now they’re modeling and selling stuff. I actually have a Kylie Lip Kit. I just had to have one to try.

D: What’s it like? I can’t do matte formulas they drive me crazy.

It’s good. I don’t use it all the time for sure, but I didn’t hate it or anything.

(At this point I’ve begun noting the numerous tattoos on Faye, so of course I ask about them.)

D: So I see your Virgo necklace and tattoo and we would be zodiac twins!

Oh you’re a virgo? That’s awesome!

D: Yeah, I’ve been meeting a lot of Virgos lately. But yeah your tatoos are really cool. I see Sonic the Hedgehog, Dirty Dancing, and oh my god I love Lisa Simpson!

Lisa is such a great character. Seasons 2-5 are the best because you have episodes like where she becomes a vegetarian and like this woman she made, well like our version of Barbie, Malibu Stacy, and she calls her out like you have this platform of power why use it to just go shopping? And she’s just very cool!

D: I’ve been thinking about getting a tattoo when I’m a little older. Maybe a lightbulb? I’m always thinking about stuff. I just hate that it’s gonna hurt. I have a LOW pain tolerance.

That’s a cool idea. It doesn’t hurt that bad.  Just make sure it’s really what you want. I’m actually thinking about maybe getting one removed. And that hurts. It’s lasers. It’s like the ink molecules are bigger than blood because you don’t want it in your bloodstream and stuff and they just zap it out. You just want to make sure it’s what you want so that down the line you won’t have those regrets.

D: Yikes! That does sound painful. Okay so last question. Last meal on earth: GO.

Oh I think a friend asked this once. I’m thinking biscuits and gravy and fried chicken. There’s this great place down this way  on Vine and Sunset called Roscoe’s Chicken. They have the BEST chicken and waffles. I adore them absolutely! You gotta go before you leave.

After that we chat a little more, and I pick up a Junior High tee shirt and 2 buttons (to be featured in a later haul post). I also grabbed a free sticker sheet, mix CD, and some more pins to add onto my jean jacket when I get home. We took a selfie, but alas, someone has stolen her selfie stick. I really did have a great time meeting Faye and checking out Junior High. So if any of you Cali are in the LA/Hollywood area, I strongly encourage you to go check it out. They’re open Thursday, Friday, and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM with various after hours events and workshops on Sundays at 2 (Check their calendar here). If you can’t swing by, go to their website, buy some merch or donate to an epic cause. Follow them @welcometojuniorhigh on IG and @juniorhighLA on Twitter.

Much love,

3 Days of Fashion- San Diego

So the last 3 days have been a complete and total blur. Early mornings, long commutes, epic workshops, and amazing people! Where can you get all that, you ask? I just attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising’s summer program 3 Days of Fashion in San Diego. We had a ton of fun, I learned a lot, and even got to meet celeb designer, Project Runway contestant, and FIDM alumni Nick Verreos. It was absolutely insane. I took many pictures, so enjoy!

Spring Break Essentials

Hello ladies and gents! I’m super excited because at 3:45 this afternoon my spring break officially starts! My family is going to Fort Walton Beach, FL which is just a 15 minute drive from Destin! I went to Destin a couple years back and I’ve been dying to go back since. I’ve already got my swimsuit and tote for beach side reading (I stopped getting in the water awhile ago though haha) but I’m trying to pack light this year, especially since I get to take my car on the trip for the first time!! I’ll have a lot more freedom to roam and shop and generally not hand out with my family for once, so I’m looking forward to it! 😉 There’s a couple things I’ll have on me that I wouldn’t leave behind on any trip let alone, spring break!

Not-Your-Mothers-Beach-Texturizing-Babe-Sea-Salt-Spray

  1. Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Salt Spray

This stuff has reached cult status IMO. It creates perfect textured waves in most hair types, and smells just like the beach (i.e. sunscreen and salt water), so even if you’re not going anywhere near it, you can still feel like it. My best recommendation is to put your hair in braids for lots of waves and a messy bun and spray for larger, loose waves.

2. A Great Pair of Sunglasses

Contrary to popular belief, you should wear sunglasses even if it’s cloudy or overcast in order to protect your gorgeous eyes! I’ve had my eyes on this pair from Total Recall Vintage for over a year now. I wanted them in white but they’ve been out of stock and don’t seem to be coming back any time soon, so red is probably the next best color for me.

3.  Glossier Coconut Balm Dotcom and Soothing Face Mist

You guys know I probably wouldn’t be able to get past this post without letting out my Glossier fangirl. I promise I’ll knock it off after my Phase 2 review. Anyways, the Coconut Balm Dotcom is like Spring Break in a tube with its scent, and the soothing face mist is a perfect refresher on a hot day! Get 20% off with my referral link!

4. A Good Book

I need to compile a list of great fashion books for you all to read because I read a lot and there are tons of great fashion and beauty books to amp up your game! I just finished reading The Gospel According to Coco Chanel by Karen Karbo. IT delves deep into the mindset and philosophies from the woman herself and her life and how she worked. Great for the coffee table, better for the beach.

5. Sunscreen

Seriously guys don’t forget this! Protect your skin! Also, you can try and find makeup and moisturizers with SPF in them if you can’t be bothered (or remember) to slather it all on before you go outside!

Have a great Spring Break (those of you who take one) and I’ll see ya soon!

How to Plan a Staycation

Let’s face it. Kids my age aren’t made out of money. All those Chinese takeout orders, Uber rides, and “treat yo-self” days have added up. Now you’re nearing holiday vacations, and you’re pretty much broke. What do you do? Try a staycation! A staycation is just what it sounds like: a vacation where you stay at home (or pretty close to it)! Here are some tips and tricks to have the best vacation ever without breaking the bank!

  1. Start in a City

If you already live in a large city, congrats! You’ve achieved step one! If not, then you should try to travel to the nearest mid- to large-sized city you can find. If there’s a “tourist trap” near where you live, that’s where you want to go. Big cities usually contain more attractions and hidden gems when it comes to entertainment than you would find in a small town.

  1. Sleep at Home

It may seem costly to drive back and forth between your home and the city each day of your staycation, but it won’t be nearly as expensive as staying at a hotel for as long as you’re there. If you’ve made a longer commute (1 hour or more) to the nearest city, then finding a local bed-and-breakfast that would be cheaper than your standard hotel room. Alternatively, you can find a friend’s place to crash at who lives closer to the city than you do.

  1. Pack a Snack!

When you set off for the day, make sure you’ve got a water bottle and some snacks in your bag to carry around for the day. That way, you won’t waste what little cash you have on overpriced food. Some ideas could be fruits that won’t get squishy (i.e. bananas, strawberries, etc.), trail mix, and fruit snacks!

  1. Find Free Stuff to Do!

A big city almost always has many activities going on like art festivals, street shows, and other cool forms of entertainment that don’t cost a thing! Check the local newspaper (I know, newspapers) because they usually have an events section somewhere in there. You can also visit local parks or just wander the streets and take in the sights. However, always be careful to be aware of your surroundings!

  1. When in Doubt, Groupon Out!

Okay, so taking in the sights sounds great in theory, but what if you stumble upon this cute little Mexican place that you’re just dying to eat at? OR maybe there’s a larger attraction you would like to enjoy without the huge price tag. In this case, Groupon is your friend! It will check the surrounding areas for any deals for food, events, or other attractions at a fraction of the price normally charged. Other apps like Retail Me Not can help you find you coupons for major organizations when you’re out and about.

  1. Bring Some Friends!

No one wants to vacation alone! Gather up your friends who may not be leaving for the holidays, and add them in on the fun. A bonus to having some friends around is that you can divide the costs of some things like gas money and money for attractions. It will be like your own little family vacation!

School breaks don’t have to be boring and depressing just because you can’t travel anywhere. There is much fun to be had right at home, without spending a ton of cash. And hey, even if a staycation isn’t for you, maybe you’ll rethink that next “treat yo-self” da

1.  My LUSH Bath Bombs

These beauties were probably the highlight of my month. They’re probably the most expensive bath toys I’ve ever bought in my life, but they were well worth it. I’m looking to try out the lemony smelling one and Tisty Toasty next.

2. Harry Potter World (dies of happiness)

Oh my god. Can I just say that my trip to Orlando was amazing?  Because it was. Being fully immersed in the world of HP was truly an experience. Also, be careful when eating Bertie Botts Beans. I ate vomit and it was awful. XP The rides were awesome although the trip through Hogwarts on Islands of Adventure was personally better to me than the Escape from Gringotts.

3. Cinderella
I’m just saw this movie last week, and my inner 4 year old had an absolutely amazing time. I loved how Prince Charming finally got a name (Kit) and Lily James did an A1 job. But those dresses!!!!!! I CAN’T.

Just yes.

The dress on the far left of this photo was worn by Beyoncé.

4. Oscar de la Renta
I’ll just reiterate one more time just how much I loved this exhibit. Being up close and personal with so much of Oscar’s work was inspiring and left me in awe that my parents just didn’t seem to understand. :p

That’s all for this month! Be on the look out for more frequent posts in the upcoming weeks. For those taking finals like me, GOOD LUCK!

Oscar de la Renta: His Lengendary World of Style

Hey peoples! I’m back and ready to get back on schedule from spring break. I had an awesome time relaxing in the historic city of Savannah, GA. I got to take tour of SCAD (The Savannah College of Art and Design) while I was there, and I have to say, I’m impressed. Firstly, everyone was dressed so creatively! It was a lot better than the cookie cutter suburb I live in. All the buildings were colorful and well designed. It was just super cool. Along with the tour, I was given free admission into the SCAD Musuem. It was there that I experienced Oscar de la Renta: His Lengendary World of Style. The exhibit was curated by fashion mogul André Leon Talley, who I know from watching countless seasons of America’s Next Top Model. The exhibit displayed many of Oscar’s works including wedding dresses, multiple Met Ball gowns, and even dresses worn by celebrities such as Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. It was a great experience, and it’s there until May 2, so if you’re in town, you should stop by and see it.v I hope you enjoy all of the pictures I took.

Have a great hump day!

Spring Break Essentials

To those of you who have already had their “spring” breaks, lucky you. For those of you still waiting, sorry Charlie. However, my Spring Break starts today! No school for 9 days (counting the weekend)!! I’m headed down to the coast of old town Savannah,Georgia to check out one of the greatest design schools of this country, the Savanna College of Art and Design (SCAD). I’ll be checking out the museum display of the late Oscar de la Renta’s dresses, and taking plenty of pictures for you guys to see (Read more about it here). I feel like no matter what you do for spring break, there are a couple essentials that you should be bringing with you.

1. SUNSCREEN

I don’t care if you’re in Paris, the Alps, or Miami. The sun is everywhere, and it can hurt you! Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go into the sun and every hour after. If you want a golden Spring Break tan, may I suggest Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Daily Moisturizer instead. You get the glow of a tan without the skin damage. Trust me on this. While I won’t get much darker than I already am while out in the sun, it is very possible for me to be sunburned and to get skin damage while laying out in the sun. Protect yourself.

2. Sunglasses

Sunglasses are on this list for the same reason that sunscreen is. No matter where you are, the sun’s harmful UV rays are in your eyes. What if it’s snowing where I am? All the more reason for sunglasses. The light is reflected off of the snow is almost as bad as looking into the sun itself. You could actually sunburn your eyes! For real. I found these super cute vintage styled sunglasses on my new fave clothing site, Total Recall Vintage.

3. A Bangin’ Playlist

I like to fill up all of my life experiences with music. That way, when I’m old and I hear a song that I’ve long since forgotten, I can associate it with a memory. Spotify always has great playlists for every mood and occasion. My favorites are Teen Party and Mood Booster!

4. Emergency Money

Planning for a trip can be very fun, but can you plan for an emergency?? Sure you can! When you’re doing the budget for food and shopping, set aside some money just in case something awful happens like…

  • You lose your passport
  • Your bag is stolen
  • You get stuck on spring break for longer than expected (delayed flight, etc.)
  • the rental car gets wrecked
  • And even more crazy stuff that you can’t possible think will happen until it does

Then put that money, separately from all of your other important things. that way if you bag is stolen or lost, it’s not with everything else that was stolen!

I hope you all have an amazing, relaxing, and fun Spring Break!

Weekend Mall Crawl

My trip to Lenox Square mall last night was anything but boring. There were new stores, renovations on old stores, good food and plenty of shopping involved. Let’s start with the whole reason I went down there in the first place: Topshop Atlanta.

image

This Topshop seemed similarly formatted to the one I visited in Las Vegas. Bright white lights, racks full of on trend clothing, and soft pulsing music filled the store. Plus, Cara Delevigne’s face was everywhere.

image

One difference of this store versus the Las Vegas location is that instead of being spread out from left to right, the store was formatted from front to back, with an escalator downstairs to compensate for the lack of space. Something also seemed to have happened with its AC unit since I started sweating the moment I walked in and noticed multiple giant AC machines near the dressing room and front counter. Hopefully, they get that fixed. The best part in my opinion was the free photo booth they had set up downstairs! If you were creeping through my IG last night, you may have seen this picture.

image

Sometimes you’ve gotta have fun all by yourself. 🙂 Besides it’s no often you get a momento from a normal trip to the mall.

Next up news wise is the addition of a new standalone MAC store! It’s about time! You know I never got my MAC Rocky Horror lipstick because it sold out online and it online sold in standalone stores, the nearest of which is over an hour away from my home. So now I’ll finally have a MAC store close to home. Here’s the temporary wall they put up while it’s being built.

image

I think my favorite part of my mall trip was my discovery of a LUSH boutique tucked away in a corner of Macy’s that until yesterday I had no clue existed! I’ve always wanted to try LUSH products because I’ve heard all of my favorite Euro bloggers raving about it, but I didnt want to shell out that much money (plus SHIPPING) on a product I’d never tried before. After my mishap with the Garnier Clean Plus Blackhead Scrub, I’ve been very careful about what I put on my skin. Luckily for me, I had the absolute coolest consultant Sophia helping me out,and she recommended a couple products to me. The first was a body wash called the Dreamwash shower smoothie which had all these cool moisturizing agents in it and some lavender to make it smell awesome. I tried it on my arm first and I instantly fell in love. I could practically feel the stuff soaking into my skin. She followed up with the Buffy Body Butter exfoliatior. This stuff is pretty much a bar of body butter with ground rice, ground almonds and ground aduki beans to help get rid of all the dead surface skin. Lastly, she put on the Dreamwash body lotion to seal in all the moisture. It was fabulous. I ended up buying the Buffy bar for home, and I’ll be coming back for the Dreamwash duo.

I also stopped by The Body Shop (which I’d also heard of but never shopped at) and picked up an olive oil infused body scrub and body butter duo, which I also tested out (on my other arm mind you) and felt and smelled fabulous as well.
Plus, I had a coupon for a free travel sized lotion from Bath and Body Works, so I got that in White Citrus. And to top it all off, my Modcloth swimsuit came in the mail today, and it looks pretty dang good on me! 😉 It was a good day.

I hope you all have a wonderful rest of the weekend and I’ll see you soon.

Love ya!
