Glossier’s latest launch has finally arrived! The newest member of the Balm Dotcom family is Birthday! In collaboration with the bakery, Milk Bar, this balm tastes and smells like their famous Birthday Cake!
The package is absolutely to die for! It includes a teeny bit of micro shimmer to add a little sparkle to your day! It shows up on my skin very well and is perfect for an on the go highlighter!
You can grab yours today for $12 or for 20% off (that’s $9.60) if you’re a first time customer! Thank you to everyone who has shopped with me so far! I wouldn’t have gotten this far without you!
I haven’t done a post like this in a very long time! I’m generally satisfied with the products I buy because a lot of research and thought goes into my purchases. I AM working with a student budget after all. That said, now that I’m trying to get into the habit of finishing up products I buy, I’m starting to realize that some of the purchases I made (or were gifted) are absolute garbage for me. Keep in mind, different products work differently for different people, so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt. So, in no particular order:
To be completely fair, this was all my fault. I wanted to try a different brow product besides Boy Brow, and Ulta had these for 50% off. After doing some color matching, I thought I’d give it a go. Bad idea! I have super thick, curly eyebrows. I don’t need a pencil to define or draw my brows in, rendering this product useless. I returned it, and I won’t be buying it again.
I love my Blushed Nudes and Rock Nudes, so I had pretty high hopes for this palette. The colors are nice, but the pigmentation is awful. All of the shades with exception of like two of them are chalky, under pigmented, and difficult to blend. BUT, they have unique colors I don’t already own, so I’ll keep putting with it for now.
So this one is a tag team because the object of both of these products is to extend the wear of my makeup. I don’t think either one of them works phenomenally! While I do sort of like the Smashbox primer, I don’t like the consistency and how it makes my skin feel. Plus, it only extends my makeup wear by about 2-3 hours which isn’t effective at all in my eyes. And the NYX Setting Spray doesn’t dry matte so my oily skin mixes with it and makes me extra shiny. Nuff said.
So I love the color of this eyeliner. And when it works, it REALLY works. The problem is that it’s too brittle and breaks off almost every time I use it. So there’s so much wasted product, it’s ridiculous! I want to try again, but I can probably find a similar color that won’t break every time I use it. Ah well. It was good while it lasted.
My very first foundation. I’m sure a lot of you guys have horror stories about that. Wrong color, too heavy handed, etc. In the color department, it’s not too shabby. But, for a foundation that’s supposedly matte, it sure doesn’t look matte. I find myself getting oily 3-4 hours after I start wearing it. Plus, I don’t think it gives the complete coverage I expected out of it. I’ve had it for a few years now, and I’m not even close to finishing it, so it’s probably going to hit the trash can during my move to my dorm.
So there you have it! 5 (or 6 technically) beauty products that weren’t my favorites and I won’t be rebuying. Make sure you check out my Instagram (@thechicmachine). I’m doing a great giveaway for the next 24 hours, and you don’t want to miss out!
Hey y’all! Happy hump day! I’m going to keep this short, sweet, and to the point. I received the Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35 sunscreen a week ago and I’ve had a chance to test it early and give you the DL on it.
The packaging, as with most G products, it very nice. It’s a yellow and white container, which is a refreshing move from the normal millennial pink. The box it comes in is a see through peach which is also a nice summer color. The box is made of the same plastic material that earbuds come in, and I’ve accidentally torn the opening flap. The pump works much better than the Glossier Milky Jelly pump! Equal product for all!
This is a clear, chemical serum sunscreen! It leaves NO white cast whatsoever. Big bonus in the Black Girl Friendly category. It smells like lemons which is a plus because I love citrus scents! It sinks into my skin very quickly (about 10-15 seconds) and a little bit of product goes a long way. The formula dries a little matte, which isn’t my favorite thing, but when I apply makeup after, it’s not a big deal.
This thing is $34. I’m not gonna lie. That’s WAY too much for what it is. There’s only 1 ounce of product, and it’s an average sunscreen at best. Once I use it a little longer, I’ll be able to fully compare it to the Missha sunblock that I’ve already used half a bottle of. That said, I’m not seriously overwhelmed by it. However, if it plants the idea in your head that you should be using sunscreen EVERY DAY, then I guess it’s worth it? But I don’t feel super comfy pushing it on yall because I don’t think it’s as revolutionary as they’re saying it is. It’s all about the exact ingredients you want in your routine I suppose, but I have fairly good skin that isn’t super sensetive, so I’m not very discretionary about many ingredients.
If you decide to purchase, remember that ANYONE can use my link, and not just new shoppers. Everyone gets free shipping at $30 and with the 20% off, the sunscreen comes down to $27.20.
I’m a 90s baby. No, I don’t actually remember being alive at that point in time, but nonetheless, I am a 90s baby. Sartorially speaking, I’m a 90s girl at heart as well. I’ve done a lot of research into that era of clothing, and I know that for punk lovers everywhere, Hot Topic was the mall’s answer to Juicy Couture’s matching tracksuits and embroidered jeans and dainty accessories of dELiA’s. As a kid, I was kind of scared to go in there because it was darker than every other store and you could hear the loud rock music from outside. BUT I’m here to tell you, HT isn’t just your 90s grunge fashion store anymore. It’s that too, but there’s actually a lot of other fun things you can get there, without shelling out a ton of cash.
This post is NOT sponsored, I just really love Hot Topic!
Speaking of inspired collections, Hot Topic’s swimwear is to DIE for. I’ve got a Little Mermaid swimsuit, but they also have swimwear based on Star Wars, animes, or just cute floral or musical note prints! The possibilities are endless and right now, all swim, tanks, and shorts are BOGO $10, so most swim sets you can get for about $35!
Tons of Accessories
Don’t even get me started on the accessories here. It’s a cosplayer’s DREAM. Along with various hairbows, jewelry, bags, and more based on almost every TV show, movie, or band in popular culture today, they also have tights, wallets, sunglasses and just EVERYTHING ELSE! A lot of it actually isn’t even character themed, so you have many options to choose from.
So now you’re thinking, those dresses and swimsuits are super cute, but they won’t fit me right? Wrong! Hot Topic has one of the best plus sized selections I’ve ever seen! It’s on par with Modcloth’s in my opinion.Almost all of Hot Topic’s dresses, pants and tops size up to a 3x, and then their plus sized range extends all the way up to a size 28! The swim lines go up to a XXL, and the plus size range extends even further (although they’ve created their own sizing guide from 0-5). They don’t sacrifice the quality of the clothing or just make a “skinny person’s silhouette” with more fabric, according to the many reviews left and as a scroll through the #HTFandom tag on IG will reveal.
Lots of Coupons
So if you’re not sold yet, I don’t know why not, but the BEST and LAST reason Hot Topic is one of the bets stores to shop is: COUPONS! They offer SO. MANY. COUPONS. Every month there’s generally a $15 off of $50 coupon for online and instore. Every few months they’ll have higher value ones ($30 off $75, $75 off $150, etc.) or lower ($10 off $30). But the holy grail is Hot Cash! Now, you can’t combine Hot Cash with other coupons, but you don’t really need to! Spend $30 during an earning period, and earn $15 in Hot Cash (redeemed as $15 off of $30). For every $30 you spend, you get HC to use during the spending period, usually two weeks after the earning period ends. I used my Hot Cash last month to buy a retro Lilo and Stitch crop top that was $30 for only $15! That’s a steal to me!
SO, if you want band merch, accessories, swim, a dress for a fancy dinner, or god knows what else, Hot Topic probably has it. It’s affordable, inclusive, and just a fun place to hang out. Talk about a real blast from the past!
Hey, everybody! After that no buy (which was more like a low buy but oh well), I’m excited for all of the beauty news coming up in April! I’ve picked up some notable sales, collection drops, and more all happening in the month of April!
Forever 21 Sale
I’m pleased to announce I’m now part of the Forever 21 affiliate program. I figure it’s not a bad match considering I’ve started buying more things from them (even if fast fashion isn’t the best for the environment). So, I’ll be finding out about some of their sales a few days before they begin and I can give you the scoop! Forever 21 will be having a BOGO Free on Sale Merch from March 30 until April 2nd! Now’s a great time to buy some offseason essentials like coats, hats, and gloves, or you can stock up on cute sunglasses and tee shirts for the summer!
H&M x Coachella
Also, I’m super excited about this year’s H&M x Coachella collection. I’m not a fan of Coachella. I think it’s a really exclusive thing for rich people to run around appropriating too many things at one time. And last year’s collection was very reminiscent of that. Lots of boho and flowing desert motifs with lots of emphasis on Native American culture. I bought my Cat Eye sunglasses from this particular collection and that was it because I couldn’t find anything else that suited me. This year’s collection is a huge step up from last year’s, and it seems like the H&M designers really took a cue to customer responses. There’s a lot of lace, hearts, and stars mixed in with tougher fabrics like denim, and it’s pretty dang cool.
Colourpop Cosmetics is having an EPIC Free Shipping sale until 3/31 at midnight! That’s free shipping on everything, no minimum! What’s that you hear? The sound of my wallet crashing and burning 🙂
MAC @ Ulta
Of course, you all know I’m super duper happy that there will be MAC at Ulta This May! This brings me one step closer to never shopping at another place for beauty ever again, but darn Glossier and Milk Makeup have got me under their spell…You can begin browsing the collection online April 23, and they will be available to purchase May 7! I’ll keep an eye out for any Platinum early access!
There’s a new PatMcGratch Kit on the horizon and it’s called DARKSTAR 006 and is due out April 11! It’s way out of my student budget (at least at the moment) but I have no doubt it’ll sell out quickly. But shoot, I’m just trying to get my hands on the original Metalmorphisis kit.
Ulta 21 Days of Beauty
The Ulta 21 Days of Beauty sale is already in full swing, but some of the best deals will be coming during the last week of the sale from April 1-8th! I’m actually waiting until the very last day of the sale (April 8th) to score the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Pencil for only $10.50! On April 1st you can score the entire Mario Badescu brand for 25% off! So there’s a lot to look forward to!
Too Faced Glitter??
Too Faced’s founder Jerrod Blandino announced on March 25th, that a Too Faced Glitter Palette is in the works, but won’t be dropping until about June. You all know I already am married to my Urban Decay Moondust palette, so I’m not dying to get my hands on this, and with Too Faced’s discrepancies between palettes, I kinda can’t wait to see if this will actually be any good.
So that’s the scoop for this month! I’ll add to this (or maybe make another post) if more good stuff comes up. Got any questions? Leave me a comment or you can reach me at any of my socials @thechicmachine!
I love watching red carpet coverage for most of the major awards shows. Not only do I get to see the beautiful dresses, but I also get to glimpse at some of the super cool makeup looks that artists put together. At this year’s Oscars, Glossier decided to debut it’s newest product, a cream blush aptly named Cloud Paint. How dreamy does that sound? The GTeam named the colors, inspired by NYC sunsets, Beam, a sweet peachy coral, Puff, a bubblegum pink, Dusk, a sandy brown, and Haze (the one I wanted to try the most), a gorgeous raspberry.
Some of my favorite celebs like Taraji P. Henson and Reese Witherspoon sported the shades on the Oscar’s red carpet, and they looked to die for! Each individual makeup artist’s look varied in how they chose to incorporate the blushes into the overall look, but I think they’ll look even more natural as standalone shades.
As a Glossier Rep, I got the privilege of trying all 4 shades BEFORE they drop TOMORROW March 2! Below you’ll find your coveted swatches. And if you like them, be sure to shop through my link for 20% off of your purchase and free shipping at $35!
They are a lot more liquidy than I thought they’d be! In fact, they all squirted out a little upon opening so be careful. They’re very creamy upon application but dry to matte within 30 seconds depending upon how much product you apply. I didn’t notice much of a scent either. The swatches on my arm all came out pretty nicely although I’m a little darker in the face so the faded into my skintone a lot more which was disappointing. I had to layer the color a few times to get a noticable glow, especially on the lighter shades Puff and Dusk. Haze was the standout color, and Beam was surprisingly fun as well although it struck me as more shimmery than the others.
I’m putting one of these babies to an all day test drive to see how long they hold up, but so far I like the formulation, but not necessarily the pigmentation. Glossier has done a good job so far in terms of customer representation, but these blushes seem to have slightly missed the mark.
Again, the release date for these blushes is TOMORROW MARCH 2. I know a couple publications had the release date set for the 6th, but the date was pushed up by the GTeam which means you guys can get your hands on it faster! Make sure you shop with me for 20% off of your order and free shipping on $35!
Since athere has been virtually no winter around here, my mind can’t help but wander towards Spring 2017 style. And while I do enjoy a lot of inspiration from the runway and magazines, sometimes I’m just feeling something in my style bones and this year, I’m freaking over floral patterns.
Yes, I respect the great words of Meryl Streep, but I also love me some florals! The thing is, with my curves, I’ve never been a fan of all over floral print. My hips stretch the fabrics and what should be a dainty patch of daisies turns wrong very fast. So I’ve come to be a fan of 1 or 2 flowers placed strategically over a piece or even better, embroidered!
So my official theme is Rose Garden Streetwear. It includes lots of darker greens (NOT Pantone’s color of the year, Greenery), all shades of pink, various reds (cherry, burgundy, deep purples) mixed with white, black and gray.
It’s also filled with feminine (a-line skirts, flower shaped lace) and edgy (leather and dark denim) silhouettes, patterns, and fabrics. Below, you can shop some of the pieces I’ve got my eye on!

This is the cutest little t-shirt shop I’ve seen in a while! It has the cool factor of a graphic tee from Forever 21 without everyone actually wearing said shirt. My personal favorites include this tee, which gives me major Hamilton #vibez.
Olive and Frank’s jackets have graced my tumblr dashboard for a couple months now, and all of their jackets are utilitarian heaven. My personal favorites are their army jackets, especially with the pink embroidery.
As you can see, I’m getting ready for the fall in a major way, and I’ll keep an eye out for more cool sites. Where are you guys shopping online right now? Leave a comment, and I’ll see you next week. Remember, there’s a giveaway on the horizon!
Happy Monday everyone! I’ve had a crazy weekend between work, going to the state fair, and trying to catch up on a bunch of schoolwork and ambassador stuff. BUT I’m here and ready to start the week! When Glossier announced the 2 new Gen G lipsticks, I was obviously stoked. I can never have enough lipstick so I ordered both Zip and Leo along with restocking my Boy Brow stash and my Priming Moisturizer (Never can have enough of it!). I’ve actually ordered from all 3 batches of Gen G (You thought there were only 2??) and I wanted to point out some of the differences between the 3.
The first color I bought was Jam, just to see if I enjoyed the formula since I’m not much of a matte girl. The color payoff was nice, but I noted that the actual lipstick had gotten caught between the cap and the tube and was smudged onto it. It was pretty noticeable considering it was see through. I wrote back in my initial post that I felt that compared to all of their other products, the Gen G tube felt cheap and plastic-y.
A few months later, when all of the lipsticks restocked, I purchased Cake, Like, and Crush. The tube was a little less see through and felt firmer, but it still wasn’t the best it could’ve been. That’s why I was really glad to see the opaque tubes that make a definite “click” sound when the cap is closed. Now that’s improvement!
Cake was a disappointingly peachy nude lipstick which was another reason I was happy to try Leo! Personally, I don’t think the formula changed much from the original, but I didn’t have a problem with it before, so that’s okay! Would I call Leo my perfect nude? No. However, it actually shows up on my lips and is very flattering for my skin tone which is more than I could say for Cake. It’s a very pretty fall color as well, so this will go into regular rotation very soon!
As for Zip, I liked it, but it wasn’t my favorite. I love bold red lipstick, and I like to reapply to keep it as opaque as possible. Zip just made me feel like I had eaten a sandwich right after putting on one of my other reds. Not patchy, but just not pigmented enough. I guess that’s a personal opinion seeing “sheer” is in the description, but I think reds should always be loud and proud!
I’m really proud to see how Glossier has progressed over the last year, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next. Want your own Gen G Lipsticks? Don’t wait! These babies will sell out quick so get yours today!
