90s Space Spice Makeup Tutorial

This past weekend, I posted this adorable photo on my Instagram (@thechicmachine)! I’d been trying to find new ways to play with my (newly dyed) hair until it grows out long enough to put into one ponytail. I think makeup looks can become a lot more diverse when your hair is put up away from your face because now you have an entire canvas to work with! Today, I’ll be teaching you how to recreate this very 90s look that I like to call “Space Spice” because if I were a Spice Girl, that’s probably the name I’d choose! PS: I swear I didn’t intentionally use all Glossier products, but they’ve worked their way so seamlessly into my routine that it happens sometimes. <3

You’ll Need:

  • Silver Toned Highlighter – I used Glossier Haloscope in Moonstone ($22)
  • Blush (Any Color as long as you look a little flushed) – I used Glossier Cloud Paint, Dusk and Haze mixed together. ($18/1 and $30/2 w/ code 2BLUSH)
  • Brow product of your choice – I used Glossier Boy Brow in Clear ($16)
  • Lipstick that closely matches your blush – I used Glossier Generation G in Jam. ($18)
  • You can also use any foundation/concealer/etc. that you’d like. However, I wanted it to be a fresher look, so I opted out of that and any eye makeup!

    Application

    1. Use whatever you have to start with a clean base! I double cleansed with Pond’s Cold Cream Cleanser and Tony Moly’s Peach Punch Sweet Foam Cleanser. I followed up with my Glossier Supers and Priming Moisturizer, and then Missha’s Safe Block SPF 45.
    2. BLUSH FIRST, THEN HIGHLIGHTER. This is especially important if they’re both powder formulas as they’ll be a little harder to blend. Since Haloscope and Cloud Paint are both cream formulas, I applied the Haze/Dusk blend first. Then, I put Moonstone right around my eyes and blended the edges together.
    3. Do your brow thing, girl!!! I put the brows after the highlight because you don’t want it smudging your perfectly fleeked brows, do you? I just throw a swipe of BB Clear through my brows and allow them to dry.
    4. Lastly, swipe your lip color of choice on and BAM, you’re done!

    Bringing Back the 90s!

Here’s the final look! Now you can recreate your own spicy vibes right at home! If you try out this look, post it on IG and tag me! Make sure to check back later this week for another Youtube video! There’s a sneak peek of the content over on my IG, and while you’re there don’t forget to follow!

    Love ya!

    Glossier Cloud Paint First Impressions

I love watching red carpet coverage for most of the major awards shows. Not only do I get to see the beautiful dresses, but I also get to glimpse at some of the super cool makeup looks that artists put together. At this year’s Oscars, Glossier decided to debut it’s newest product, a cream blush aptly named Cloud Paint. How dreamy does that sound? The GTeam named the colors, inspired by NYC sunsets,  Beam, a sweet peachy coral, Puff, a bubblegum pink, Dusk, a sandy brown, and Haze (the one I wanted to try the most), a gorgeous raspberry.

Some of my favorite celebs like Taraji P. Henson and Reese Witherspoon sported the shades on the Oscar’s red carpet, and they looked to die for! Each individual makeup artist’s look varied in how they chose to incorporate the blushes into the overall look, but I think they’ll look even more natural as standalone shades.

Image from Into the Gloss; Taraji is wearing Cloud Paint in Dusk

As a Glossier Rep, I got the privilege of trying all 4 shades BEFORE they drop TOMORROW March 2! Below you’ll find your coveted swatches. And if you like them, be sure to shop through my link for 20% off of your purchase and free shipping at $35!

    Pretty Paint!

    First Impressions?

They are a lot more liquidy than I thought they’d be! In fact, they all squirted out a little upon opening so be careful. They’re very creamy upon application but dry to matte within 30 seconds depending upon how much product you apply. I didn’t notice much of a scent either. The swatches on my arm all came out pretty nicely although I’m a little darker in the face so the faded into my skintone a lot more which was disappointing. I had to layer the color a few times to get a noticable glow, especially on the lighter shades Puff and Dusk. Haze was the standout color, and Beam was surprisingly fun as well although it struck me as more shimmery than the others.

    Bottom Line?

I’m putting one of these babies to an all day test drive to see how long they hold up, but so far I like the formulation, but not necessarily the pigmentation. Glossier has done a good job so far in terms of customer representation, but these blushes seem to have slightly missed the mark.

Again, the release date for these blushes is TOMORROW MARCH 2. I know a couple publications had the release date set for the 6th, but the date was pushed up by the GTeam which means you guys can get your hands on it faster! Make sure you shop with me for 20% off of your order and free shipping on $35!

    Happy Hump Day!

Product Review: Glossier Boy Brow Clear

Happy Friday everyone! I’m so happy it’s the weekend FINALLY. Weekends are my chill time, so my makeup look can be pretty nonexistent. However, if I decide to go out somewhere, I want to look nice without all of the work. Enter Boy Brow Clear. Y’all know that BB Black is my holy grail eyebrow product since I hate going to get my brows waxed. When Glossier announced BB Clear, I knew I couldn’t wait to try it out! The formula itself goes on white and dries clear. It has the same effectiveness in holding down hairs without the color. It’s perfect for everyday wear, PLUS the applicator seems to pick up more product than my BB Black which I love!

Got my BB Black on in this pic! <3

    Bottom Line?

I love this stuff so much that I’ve lost count of how many tubes I’ve ordered. I think the BB Clear that Glossier sent me makes #6 or 7 overall. Either way, this has made its way into my everyday rotation, and I highly recommend it to anybody with big caterpillar brows like myself or not! Boy Brow also comes in Blonde and Brown! Want to try for yourself? Use my special link to get 20% off your first purchase and free shipping at $30!

    Have an awesome weekend!

I’m a Glossier Brand Rep! + Priming Moisturizer Rich Review

Happy Friday, everyone! Before we get to this super luxe face cream review, I have some great news! Late last year, I started following a couple girls on Instagram who suddenly had Glossier brand rep pages. For those of you who know my history with Glossier, y’all know exactly what I thought. Hey, I want one of those! Well, earlier this month, I finally got the coveted email asking me to join the Glossier brand rep program! I was super stoked (of course) because now instead of store credit, I have an affiliate link!

To be clear, 1st I had the regular referral link that’s open to all Glossier customers. Then I was a member of their affiliate program for which I earned a commission. NOW, I’m a part of the rep program that mixes the best parts of both! YOU GUYS now get 20% off your 1st purchase and free shipping at $30, AND I get actual money. Win/Win!Just a heads up, though. My old referral link no longer works, so if you want the discount, you have to go through my page. I’ve taken the time to go through my old posts and switch the links so none of them should be broken, but let me know if you have issues. All the links should now take you to a page that looks like this!

If it weren’t for all of you loyal readers, I never could’ve gotten where I am today, so again I thank you. Now, onto the good stuff!

    Priming Moisturizer Rich Face Cream!

After 3 weeks of use, I feel I can write a pretty good review about the PM Rich! Glossier again crowdsourced ideas through Into the Gloss, which is how Milky Jelly came along too! I really loved the packaging on this one! Glossier seems to be stepping it up every time. I love seeing this jar next to my Super Serums! So luxurious!

They really hit the nail on the head with the formula for this one. PM Rich is supposed to be similar to the regular Priming Moisturizer, but with a thicker consistency for dry skin. I have combo skin that switches between oily and dry, and it worked on any day so that was a plus! It is WAY thicker than the regular PM, and is closer in consistency to Julep’s Night Shift Cream which is the night cream I’ve used for almost 3 years.

I’m a little meh on the scent. They used lavender, which is usually a great scent to me! It’s different than rosewater which is a plus, but I guess I’m still getting used to it. It’s not medicinal, just odd. It also takes a lot more product to cover my face due to the thicker consistency. This has led to me using a good portion of the jar in only 3 weeks which sucks because I don’t want to run out that fast. Keep in mind it usually takes me 4-6 months to finish ONE bottle of the regular PM if I’m careful. So although it’s only $35, in repurchases, it could add up.

    Bottom Line?

I would recommend this cream to my friends, especially those with dry skin. It looks great on your counter, feels great on your skin, and makes an ordinary day feel luxe! If you want to buy one for 20%, just hit this link and go check out my page! Also, new products mean a giveaway on the horizon…Want to know when the next one is? My Twinkle Voxbox & My Thoughts on Influenster

Last month, Influenster selected me to participate in their holiday Voxbox, the Twinkle VoxBox! I certainly enjoyed my Covergirl Voxbox and round two sounded great! This particular box contained a mixture of “holiday essentials” both for beauty and food. Sadly, 2 of the products were chocolate, so I didn’t eat them, but my family got a kick out of it. I’m mostly here for the beauty products anyway! I must mention that I received the Twinkle Voxbox from Influenster for testing purposes, but all opinions are my own!

    Covergirl So Lashy! Mascara

I felt most excited to receive this mascara out of all of the products teased. Ads for this mascara were in all of my magazines and on Youtube, so I was already familiar with it. I have to say I am very disappointed in this mascara. Since I only have my own eyelashes to work with, I couldn’t test its claim to be the best mascara for all lash types. It just didn’t work for mine. The applicator picks up way too much product even after swiping excess onto the tube which led to clumps. Also, I didn’t see the point of the ball on the end of it? It’s supposed to grab smaller lashes at the inner eye, but I don’t think it did anything I can’t already do with a regular mascara. It’s such a miss which I hate because I wanted to love it.

    Aquation Daily Moisturizing Lotion

I’m on the fence about this lotion. During the winter, I get horrible itchy bumps around my knees that no amount of moisture seemed to be able to help. Not baby oil, cocoa butter, and certainly not super fragranced Bath and Body Works lotion. I started using this the night I got the box over my entire body, and not four days later, all of the bumps around my knees were gone. Eureka! I thought I’d finally hit the jackpot! But about a week ago, a strange rash showed up all over the back of my right hand and on my left shoulder. Naturally, I stopped using it, but neither has left. I’m not sure if I had a bad reaction to the lotion or to something I ate/took after my surgery. I’ll update this once I have a doctor’s visit!

Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo

I love NYM’s products! I’ve purchased both their argan oil and sea salt spray multiple times, and I’ve been satisfied with their other products as well. This just wasn’t a product designed for my hair. My hair is thick, coarse, and soaks up moisture like a sponge. Therefore, I don’t need a dry shampoo to soak up excess oils! And, it was unscented, so I couldn’t even enjoy that. 🙁 Probably going to gift it to a friend.

    Final Twinkle VoxBox Verdict

Okay, I feel bad because it sounds like I hated this VoxBox but I didn’t! Overall, the Twinkle Voxbox had amazing value, and great name brand products for me to try out for FREE which never hurts. Hopefully next time, the products work for me a little better!

Want to earn a VoxBox for yourself? Join Influenster with my unique referral link and start connecting your socials. 2017 No Buy Beauty Instagram Challenge

One of the things I am immensely proud of in my life is my Platinum status at Ulta. In my eyes, it shows my makeup junkie status and knowledge. I take it almost as a challenge every year.  It’s also the reason I spent over $450 there last year and $400 the year before that. *REALLY LOUD RECORD SCRATCH* Say what now? Okay okay, I know it sounds terrible. How vain is she to spend that much money on makeupTo be fair, I spent about half of that at their Salon, which adds up pretty quickly.

All that being said, when I looked at the purchases I made over the last 2-3 months, in many of them, I bought a beauty product. I know buying that much makeup on such a regular basis is NOT a great investment of my money. So, my first challenge to myself for 2017 is a 2 month no buy on beauty products!

    What is the challenge?

For those of you who would like to participate in the no buy with me, here are the rules!

    • No buying any new cosmetic products! This includes new makeup, tools and brushes, and extracurricular skincare products (i.e. sheet masks, Bath and Body Works lotion, etc) until March 15.
    • The exception to this rule is rebuying products. So, if you run out of your regular concealer, primer, cleanser, etc. you can go out and grab a new one. I anticipate me emptying my Garnier Micellar water within the next few weeks, hence this rule.
    • If you receive a gift card or store credit, you are allowed to buy something with that credit. (I encourage you to save it for later, though!)
    • Of course, if you receive a gift you can take it, but try not to break it open until the challenge is over!
    • Lastly, in order to hold us all accountable and to help grow this community, I’m hosting my first Instagram challenge! Every day all the way through the end of the challenge, I’m going to post a picture of either my makeup look for the day or just a picture of the makeup (or skincare!!!) that I have on my face that day using the hashtag #TCMNoBuy. You guys can share your pics with the hashtag and tag me @thechicmachine! I’ll feature some of the best ones! It’ll be a fun way for us to connect and see all of the cool looks you all come up with. I’ll be posting on IG with the rules again in a little bit!

    What’s the goal?

I’m hoping that by committing myself to this challenge, I’ll save some money, use up some product that’s close to expiring, and allow me to see all of the really cool new makeup styles I can create using what I already have! Because contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to spend a fortune to have nice looking makeup, and you certainly don’t need makeup to look good! 😉

But what about your product reviews?

Don’t worry you guys. I bought a LOT of stuff and even got a couple freebies, so I’ll have plenty of items to review between now and the end of the no buy. Plus, I did my quarterly closet purge and restocked with most of my Black Friday and After Christmas purchases. I want to show you all the fashion side of me too! Stay tuned, and make sure you’re signed up for my email list so you don’t miss a thing!

    Ready, Set, Go!

Shopping Alert: Glossier Priming Moisturizer Rich Releases TODAY

For all of you suffering from dry winter skin, I feel ya.

My mild eczema loves to flare up in the winter! While getting a good cream for my arms and legs is fairly easy, it’s hard to find a facial cream! You want it to be a balance between moisturizing and not super heavy on the face! Glossier did what it does best, which was poll all of its readers on their home blog Into The Gloss about what would make the perfect thick facial moisturizer for them (I helped!). Now, a little over a year since they posted the open thread, the Priming Moisturizer Rich here!

The moisturizer is supposed to be a thicker version of their Priming Moisturizer which I already use! The best part is, it’s only $35 which is cheap compared to other luxury skin creams! I’m really excited to try it, and you can buy yours too by clicking here or on any of those Glossier banners you see around the site! Just a little reminder that if you choose to buy through my links, I get a teeny tiny commission that goes towards the upkeep of my new website!

    Thanks, and happy shopping!

Glitter Babe Makeup Tutorial – #MakeupMonday

Guys, I am soooo here for anything glittery. Like I’ve been dying ever since I saw Fendi send glitter lips down the runway in September during NYFW because I knew glitter was about to have a moment. I’ve always liked to play around with the more sparkly side of makeup as opposed to the “no makeup” makeup trend because it’s so much fun! Urban Decay does both (Get you a brand who can do both LOL) so it’s really fun for me to try it all out! Back in August when I went to the new Ulta store in the town next to mine, I finally got my hands on the UD Moondust Palette and I fell in Love with a capital L y’all! I also tried out the UD Revolution Lipstick in Vice and I vowed I’d be back for both! Of course I had to wait until I had money (ugh) but I got my hands on them plus the UD Eyeshadow Primer Potion!!!

Now, I’m one of those people who doesn’t really believe in “everyday makeup” because I think if you wear a certain type of makeup and you’re happy with it, then of course you can wear it every day! And I like feeling like I just walked into an intergalactic space wedding all the time, so I try to incorporate glitter into all of my makeup looks. Today I’ve got a tutorial for a look that I’ve worn a couple times and I’m really loving it so here we go!

    I used:

    Application

    1. I like to start with my eyeshadow because of fallout that could potentially mess up any skin stuff I do later This applies especially because glitter has a real tendency to fall everywhere and get stuck to everything. I primed with the NYX Glitter primer that I hunted for all summer and I LOVE. Then I applied the color “Lightyear” by itself. I chose no base color to see how opaque the colors are and it’s very opaque and very glitter filled! You could use a base color to really make it pop, but I don’t think you’d need to.
    2. Next, to make the color reach all the water my waterline, I lined my eyes with Coloupop’s Gel Liner Pencil in Teaspoon. It’s a gorgeous green that almost perfectly matches Lightyear, minus the glitter. I finished up the eyes by curling my lashes and applying the Miss Manga Mascara!
    3. Then for the face, I applied my Covergirl Clean Matte BB cream and buffed it out with a basic makeup egg sponge. I tried to stay away from the places my glasses touch my face because like I said in an earlier review, they tend to make the matte formula melt and slip all over the place. After that, I applied the Clean Matte Pressed Powder lightly to the glasses affected areas and normally to the rest of my face.
    4. Besides the Moondust glitter, I think that the highlighter really can make or break this look! Instead of applying near my temples and brow bone like I usually do, I used it like a blush. I applied liberally on the cheeks and blended upwards towards the ears. I think it really brightened my whole face and looked great under the lights!
    5. Then, I applied the Revolution lipgloss and kept it sheer. It’s still pretty pigmented and full of glitter for a gloss. Finally, I stroked my brows with Boy Brow to get them to lay down and it’s done!

    Glitter Galore!

Here is the final look after alllll of that! I had a lot of fun doing this tutorial because I really haven’t done one in a while! Do you guys want more written or video tutorials? Leave a comment below and let me know what else you’d like to see coming up! And if you try it make sure to post and tag me @thechicmachine!
    Love ya!
