Product Review: Glossier Wowder For Dark Skin

Hey, everyone! Sorry for the delay in posts, but if you’ve been following me on literally any of my socials (@thechicmachine) then you’d know I finally moved into COLLEGE! Yes, siree I’m officially a Georgia State Panther and I’ve been exploring campus and all it has to offer. The transition has been great, I’ve met a lot of cool people, and my classes aren’t terrible which is always a plus. One of the things about living on campus in a metro area like Atlanta is that there is a lot of walking involved. Great for my calves, not so great for my makeup. I have combo oily skin with most of the oiliness occurring in my T-Zone, and this is extra sucky with the Georgia humidity. Thankfully, Glossier has released another product designed for those not 100% on board with their “ultra dewy” messaging! Wowder is a translucent powder in three shades designed to mattify and decrease shine on days when dewy is not on the memo.

Product Review: Glossier Wowder For Dark Skin

I received Wowder in the shade Dark/Deep which is my corresponding shade in Perfecting Skin Tint and Stretch Concealer. I’ve never used another translucent powder, but I have used the Covergirl Clean Matte Pressed Powder so that’s what I compared this to. For a good frame of reference, the first several times I used Wowder, I did not use my Urban Decay setting spray to see how well it worked on its own. The first time I wore Wowder, I put it on my whole face. Now my cheeks and chin are not oily and can verge on dry from time to time, so this did not sit well. It clung to my dry patches a bit so I didn’t like that at all!

On the other hand, on my t-zone it worked very well. It didn’t sit on the top of my skin as a pigment like the Covergirl pressed powder, but almost melted into a cream like consistency after application. It didn’t make my skin look overly pale, and made it look matte but not dried out. The wear time on my forehead was about 8 hours, but on my nose, it wa only about 4. What can I say? I’m hella oily!

Product Review: Glossier Wowder For Dark Skin

The Wowder brush was a totally different story! It’s smaller than my Real Techniques powder brush and more angled so I could get spots like under my eyes and on the sides of my nose. As for the trampoline mesh, I think it’s helpful to an extent, but it’s actually harder to get out the amount I need sometimes.

For $35, it’s a great value. You get a brush that you can use with other products and a .25 oz powder that works well with oily skin and has a natural finish when used correctly. If you think you’ve gotten the wrong shade you can always exchange it for free, and the duo ships free! Wowder by itself is $22 USD and the brush alone is $20.

Remember you can get 20% off of your purchase with my referral link which puts the duo at $28! Leave me a comment below about your oily or dry skin nightmares! Have an awesome week!

Glossier Wowder Is Here

Good news for all of my Glossier fans out there! It’s LAUNCH DAY! Today, Glossier has dropped the latest in its line of makeup, Wowder. Now, all the marketing talking about “It’s not a powder. It’s Wowder.” is a little cheesy, I’ll admit. However, as a person with combo oily skin, all of Glossier’s products do not work for my skin as they adhere strictly to their “dewy” look (talking about you PM Rich!). SO I’m very excited to try a powder that can possibly control this oil on my face! I currently use the Covergirl Clean Matte Pressed Powder, and I’ll have a comparison review up after I’ve had some time to test it out more thoroughly.

I was always skeptical of loose, translucent type powders because they always look so white in the pan, but Wowder comes in 3 different shades! Plus, Jackie Aina already put up her review of it, so I know this is coins well spent! Wowder costs $22 USD ($27 CAD) by itself for the inevitable restock, BUT you can get a Wowder/Brush combo for $35 USD ($45 CAD) which saves you $7 than if you bought the brush and Wowder separately. If you don’t need another powder (and let’s be honest with ourselves here) but you want to give the brush a go, it is $20 USD ($25 CAD). Now for me, that’s a lot for a brush, and I’ll also be comparing this brush to my Real Techniques powder brush in the near future.

Are you a first time Glossier customer? Well, you’re in luck! Shop with my link and get 20% off and EVERYONE gets free shipping with the Wowder Duo! That’s $28 USD ($36 CAD) for the duo, $17.60 USD ($21.60 CAD) for just the Wowder, and $16 USD ($20 CAD) for just the brush! So what are you waiting on??

Product Review: Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick

Is it just me, or are drugstore makeup names getting longer and longer? It’s sort of funny! Speaking of, today’s review is for the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick! I received the shades Pioneer, a true blue-red, and Lover, a pinky mauve for review from Influenster. If you’ve never used Influenster before, it’s a great review site that I use for all of my beauty purchase research! In return for interacting with the community, Influenster occasionally sends me VoxBoxes with beauty products to test out. Wanna join? Click here! The product was a gift, but of course, all opinions are my own. I’m breaking down Maybelline’s claims to see if it’s worth it’s near $10 price tag.

Product Review: Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick

Precise Application?

The SuperStay Matte Ink lipstick features an arrowhead applicator which Maybelline claims allows a more precise application. I, personally, am not a fan of the arrowhead applicator because the actual formula of the lipstick is a bit too thick to spread easily with that shape. I prefer doe foot applicators over all else, so if they update it in the future, I’d like to try it again! However, the pigmentation is absolutely fantastic! I loved both colors, and I think I’m closer to finding my perfect nude pink every day!

Product Review: Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick

Flawless Matte Finish?

After application, the lipstick definitely looked as if it had a perfect matte finish. However, for the first 15-20 minutes after application, I found my lips to be incredibly sticky. Not like a gloss, but almost tacky, and it didn’t feel very good. Then, after it fully dried, it was like a regular matte. It wasn’t overly drying, and it moved well without any cracks or creases.

16 Hour Staying Power?

This was the biggest claim that this lipstick made, and most times, lipsticks that make these types of claims never live up to the hype without a whole bunch of external help. But when I say this stuff stays, it stays!!! I put it on one morning to run errands, eats breakfast and lunch, etc. I fell ill later that evening and went to bed without washing my face (big no no guys!). When my mom woke me up later, she asked: “Why do you have on a full thing of pink lipstick?” I couldn’t even feel it, so I went to the mirror and there was very little creasing and only a little fading on the inside of my lip. So I’ll give this one an A+ for staying power!

Product Review: Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick

Overall, I liked the Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipsticks, but not any better or worse than other liquid lipsticks I own. I really like the colors and staying power on this one, but the applicator and sticky feel were both turn offs. For $9.49, I wouldn’t buy this myself, but I wouldn’t mind getting one as a gift!

I hope you all enjoyed my review! What’s your favorite liquid lipstick and shade? Let me know below in the comments! Have an awesome week!

June Makeup & Skincare Empties 2017

June Makeup & Skincare Empties

A few months ago, I tried examining my spending and beauty habits. While I did spend less money than I normally do, I still found it difficult to completely refrain from purchasing anything. Since then, I’ve made it my goal to finish some of the beauty and skincare products I already have! This month, I have a lot more empties than I normally do, so I figured I do a whole post about it.  Original reviews of the products are linked so you can see how I felt about them when I first got them versus now!

Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser

This is my third bottle of this cleanser that I’ve been through, and while it’s very gentle and calming on my skin, especially when my skin is irritated, it doesn’t do much for controlling my natural oils. For this reason, I’m going to experiment with some other cleansers starting with the Biore Baking Soda Foaming Cleanser. I’ll have to do a full review later, but I think that the Biore cleanser is irritating my skin AND not helping my oily skin over the last 3 or so weeks, so it’s probably getting returned soon (READ: Reasons I love Ulta’s return policy).

Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask

This mask is pretty much my holy grail sleeping mask right now. I like my Julep Night Shift mask for the winter because it’s a bit heavier, but the Moon Mask is just the right consistency. The Glossier Priming Moisturizer Rich is way too heavy and oily for my skin now, in the middle of the summer than it was back in January, and the lavender scent isn’t my favorite thing in the world, but I’m trying to empty it before I break into my new Moon Mask.

Glossier Boy Brow in Black

I’ve already waxed poetic about this stuff time and time again, so I’ll leave the link above, and just letting you know that this is my 8th (I think) bottle of BB, not counting Clear if that’s any indication of how good this stuff is.

Olay Ultra Moisture Body Wash

I received this gel in my April ONYX box, bit I think this shower gel wasn’t anything too special. It was moisturizing, but I put lotion on after the shower anyway, so I don’t feel the need to have an overly moisturizing shower gel. I’m more into how stuff smells, so I wasn’t sad when this was gone.

Bath and Body Works Vanilla Bean Noel Body Lotion

This is my favorite scent from BBW that you can currently buy. I know it’s a seasonal Christmas scent, so I tend to buy 2 or 3 bottles during the Semi-Annual Sale, and just use that year round until it’s Christmas time again. Going through any big bottle of lotion is feat so I’m patting myself on the back for this one. That being said, I REALLY wish that they would bring back the Lemon Vanilla scents. If they did, I’d toss this in a heartbeat lol. Your Limoncello fave could NEVER.

& Other Stories Lemon Daydream Body Lotion

This is a sample of lotion I got with my recent & Other Stories purchase that I was finally getting around to using. It was a decent sized packet, and I was able to get both of my legs, feet, and arms with it so that’s good. It also was fairly moisturizing, more like a cream than a lotion, but not a body butter. As mentioned above, I’ve been trying to find a replacement for the BBW Lemon Vanilla ever since it was discontinued, but this is not it. It has more of a dirty, earthy scent mixed in with the lemons. I wouldn’t purchase the full size.

So there you have my June empties! Here’s hoping I have more empties to report on as I slowly declutter my stash. If you want to see more of my empties mini reviews, check out my Instagram, @thechicmachine! Also, don’t forget you can grab any Glossier goodies in this post for 20% off if it’s your first purchase! If not, I’d love for you guys to keep shopping with me, and I appreciate it if you already have! For my American readers, Happy 4th of July. Here’s hoping we make it out of this national clusterf— alive! To everyone else, we’ll be quite and hungover tomorrow! See you soon!

Product Review: Milk Makeup Blur Stick for Dark Skin

Product Review: Milk Makeup Blur Stick

Hey, guys! This week, I’m bringing you another product review that I know a lot of my darker skinned beauties have been looking forward to: the Milk Makeup Blur Stick. I received a mini Blur Stick Sample when I ordered their Eye Pigment in Mermaid Parade (swatch on my Insta!). My Smashbox Primer isn’t the greatest for oily skin, so I’m in the market for a new primer. Plus, they claim it’s completely colorless, so it’s good for all skin tones, and I wanted to put that to the test.

What is Blur Stick?

The Blue Stick is described as a solid stick primer that is silicon and oil free, mattifying, and reduces the appearance of pores. I wanted to try it mainly on my T-Zone because it’s super oily! It’s also advertised as a completely colorless primer, although it looks like a light tan in the tube. So I wanted to test how true that claim really was. It’s $36 for the full size (1 oz) which doesn’t seem like a lot, but in stick form, a little goes a long way!

The Break Down

It smells amazing, like oranges and lemons. However, if your skin has a sensitivity to citrus oils, I’d stay very far away from this! I think because I got a mini size, the application was a little bit awkward because I couldn’t cover my face very easily, and had to rub it in with my fingers, which almost defeated the purpose. However, using the full sized tester at Sephora, it’s a lot more seamless. I can say that it does leave the teeniest gray cast on my face, but because it’s a primer, I assume most people would be applying some color product over it, and it does not show through.

I found that it did mattify my T-Zone very well, but when on my cheeks, which are normal, it was very drying. So I recommend this for oily skin types, and not normal or dry. It held up much better than my Smashbox Photo Finish Primer which only lasts about 4 hours before getting shiny. The Blur Stick held up for about 7 before I noticed much shininess besides the end of my nose.

Bottom Line?

I recommend the Blur Stick for those with oily skin and who want no fuss application. It is #blackgirlfriendly, and I give it my full approval! However, I probably will still keep looking for another primer after I run out of this one.

If you guys know of some good foundation primers for darker skin tones and oily skin, PLEASE let me know in the comments!

Product Review: L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation

Product Review: L'Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation

Summer is here, and I’m in the mood to shop for some new seasonal makeup. Don’t get me wrong, I’m always in the mood to shop anyway, but changing seasons just makes it worse. I like my bareMinerals powder foundation, but I wanted to try something with a little more coverage. Anyone who knows me, knows I’ve been getting into K-Beauty recently, and I’d read a lot about the K-Beauty trend that has made its way stateside: cushion compacts.

What is a cushion compact?

Essentially, a cushion compact is a compact with a sponge inside that holds your product of choice (foundation, BB cream, etc.). The L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation holds about half an ounce of product in its cushion, and you press on it to release it to your applicator! The idea is that it’s an easy, mess-proof way of carrying around your liquid foundation. I really enjoyed the packaging of the compact, because it was very easy to take with me, and I didn’t have to worry about it spilling into my bag. Plus, it had a handy dandy mirror on the inside! I did NOT like the applicator puff it came with, however, and I much preferred using my Ulta version of a BeautyBlender.

Product Review: L'Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation

I purchased the cushion in the darkest shade, C8 Cocoa. Firstly, let me point out that if am their darkest shade, then we have a problem. Now I know L’Oreal isn’t known for their vast shade range like other drugstore brands like Maybelline, it’s still annoying that I’m the darkest color in their line. And it still wasn’t perfect. Not by a long shot.

Product Review: L'Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation

As you can see in the above swatch, at first glance, it doesn’t look like a terrible match. However, when I put it on my face, it looked very ashy, and too cool toned for my skin. On top of that, I have oily skin, so the extra shine wasn’t particularly flattering on me. I didn’t wear it throughout the whole day because I decided I would exchange the color and then test it for wear time.

Product Review: L'Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation
With the flash!
Product Review: L'Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation
Without the flash!

Unfortunately, the shade W8 Creme Cafe was even worse than its cool counterpart. I was so yellow it was ridiculous and I didn’t even take a photo. It was that horrendous. So I ended up returning that shade as well, and I’m still in the market for a new foundation.

Bottom Line?

No, I would not recommend this product to my darker skinned beauties. I also would not recommend it for those with oily skin, as it has a dewy finish that just adds to our natural shine. For $17, it’s not worth the price tag, even if it is in an innovative (to the West at least) package. I know there are some empty cushions you can purchase and full with your own foundation, so maybe if I find the right color for me, I would invest in one so I can have the best of both worlds!

What is your absolutely favorite foundation, and in what shade? Do you have foundation horror stories (I’m sure you do)? Leave me a comment down below! Also, I’d love for you to sign up for my newsletter so you never miss a post!

4 Foolproof Makeup Tips for Glasses Wearers

I have worn my glasses for 10 long years now. I started wearing makeup about 3 years ago. Since then, I’ve encountered more than a few issues of “this just doesn’t look right.” With graduation coming up THIS FRIDAY, I began thinking about what will look best and last longest with my glasses. I realized that I’ve now got a few tools under my belt to make wearing makeup with glasses the best possible experience! However, I don’t want to get contacts (right now anyway) so no, that isn’t one of the tips. Besides, frames are an extra accessory that can help pull many outfits together! So let’s get started!

1. Curled Lashes Don’t Touch Glasses

The very first tip I want to share is a very common problem with glasses wearers! “Finally I’ve found the perfect mascara to lengthen and darken my lashes! But wait! They’re touching my lenses! Argghhhh!” At least, that’s how my inner monologue used to go until I invested in an eyelash curler. Eyelash curlers were one of those things that I considered an unnecessary beauty expense. Then, I bought a Sally Hansen one at Ross for $5, and it pretty much changed my life. My lashes don’t touch my lenses anymore, so they’re no longer leaving little mascara streaks on them either. Plus, I can blink without feeling them scrape the lens over and over and over! Just make sure you’re replacing it consistently for the best curl! Eyelash curlers have a life expectancy of 6 months.

2. Bye Bye Under Eye Shadows

Since I’ve been wearing my glasses for so long, I’ve naturally developed under eye circles where they rest on my face. Plus, with brown eyes and brown skin, the areas behind my glasses tend to look darker and in shadow. In order to combat this problem, I always apply concealer under my eyes in a triangle shape, even if I don’t wear it anywhere else. This highlights the area that is missing a little bit of light, and tends to make you look more awake as well! I wear Stretch Concealer in Deep and apply with a Real Techniques Concealer brush.

3. Leave the Bridge Bare

My biggest problem with glasses and makeup is the dreaded bridge of my nose. I have combo oily skin, with all of the oil in my T-Zone. That makes sure that all my makeup creases, slides, and more in that area. It’s annoying at best and actually damaging to my skin at worst! Back when I still wore makeup on the bridge of my nose, I actually had part of my the skin in that area rubbed completely raw between my glasses, the summer heat, and the makeup. It burned for days, and after no makeup and TLC for a week, I learned my lesson! Now, I don’t apply makeup to my bridge at all. For me, it’s less aggravating and safer for my skin. It’s all going to be covered by the frames anyways, so I’m not worried about not looking put together either.

4. Glasses Frame Your Face But Brows Frame Your Frames

If eyes are the windows to the soul then your eyebrows are certainly the curtains! Take good care of your brows and shape them to complement your glasses and not your face. While it’s important to keep your brows somewhat complementary to your face shape, your glasses come into play as well. My glasses are rounded squares and my brows play into that! I learned how to razor my own brows into the shape I wanted with this lovely video from GlambyChen’e. You all know I subscribe to Glossier Boy Brow wholeheartedly because it’s more of a pomade so I’m not worried about my glasses smudging it off. However, for those of you more gifted in Brow Artistry (browtistry?) than I am, I know you all don’t want your hard work messed up either. So make sure you also set your brows with your setting spray of choice.

I hope I was able to help you guys with some makeup tips while wearing sunglasses! Do you wear glasses? What kind, and what makeup tips do you have? Leave me a comment, and I’ll see you next week with more fun stuff!

Here are 4 foolproof tips to look your best while wearing makeup with glasses!
