We Are ONYX: The Beauty Box For Brown Girls

Welcome to a new week ladies and gents! I’m currently mourning the fact that spring break is over and I have to go back to school. BUT, I only have 29 more school days until GRADUATION, so that’s coming really fast! Last week, I received an ONYX box, a beauty subscription box curated with people of color in mind, for review from the company. Although the product was free, all opinions are my own. Let’s get started!

The Packaging

The box was actually a LOT smaller than I was anticipating from my previous experienceΒ with subscription boxes. Don’t let it fool you, though! It’s packed full with goodies! I also like how the decorative stickers make it very clear that this box was intended for people of color. I have a hard time with conventional subscription boxes because 9/10 times I’m going to get at least 1 product that does not work for my skin color or hair type. That devalues the box in my eyes, and I’m not getting what I paid for.

I also really enjoyed their faux magazine cover insert which includes all of their social handles and theme for the month which was Spring Prep Rally! To quote from the insert:

Maxi dresses. Music Festivals. County Fairs. Are you ready for Spring? Let us prepare you with a few of our fave beauty essentials. Deep clean your pores, hydrate your body, and prime your face for the proper Spring glo-up.

Sometimes subscription boxes have a hard time staying on theme as well, and I think they did a really good job at sticking to this one! So what did I get? Keep scrolling to find out.

The Products

See how packed full it is? In fact, when I took the picture, I didn’t realize there was another product hiding underneath the confetti and other products! Also, one thing I was worried about was that it might feature ALL product lines geared towards people of color. While there’s nothing wrong with that, I do enjoy trying out more mainstream products that I’ve already heard of. Luckily, there was a good mix of the two types.

Olay Ultra Moisture Shea Butter Body Wash (Travel Size 1.7 Fl oz $1.49, Full Size $3.99-$5.49)

I can never have enough body wash to be honest. Olay is one of the brands that floats in and out of my house, but I never actively seek it out. It’s infused with petroleum and shea butter and includes “pro-glycerin” to allow your skin to absorb the moisture it needs. This has a nice fragrance, almost like coconut mixed with salon shampoo. It’s very creamy in texture, but I don’t find it to be any more moisturizing than any other body wash I’ve used before.

Creme of Nature Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner (Deluxe Size 2 Fl oz, Full Size $5-$6.50)

I just want to put out there that I hate getting shampoo and conditioner in beauty boxes. I get my hair done at the salon and almost NEVER wash my own hair at home unless it’s been too long between visits and it needs to be touched up. So no, I haven’t used this product. That said, I think it’s good that they selected a brand that is more geared towards the hair texture of curly haired women, and it may be more useful for them that way.

Gorgeous Cosmetics iLine Liquid Eyeliner Pen (FULL SIZE $27)

(Sorry for the blurry picture!) I was very VERY happy to get this liquid eyeliner pen in a full size! By itself, it has more value than the whole box so that’s a good indicator of a subscription box’s value! Liquid eyeliner and I have had a hard time in the past (I used the little e.l.f. ones), but this one has changed the game for me. It has a pointed felt tip and it glides on SO easily! It’s much easier for me a do a winged look ( I had to practice for ages to get it right with my Maybelline gel pencil) and it’s very pigmented which is always a plus.

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer (Deluxe Travel Size .25 fl oz $10, Full Size 1 fl oz $36)

I already own this primer in its travel size because I wanted to test it out. I’ve been using it for some months now, and my final verdict is that it’s okay. It holds my makeup in place alright for the first 2 or so hours, but after that, it starts sliding around anyway. I think my oily T-Zone is the problem, but regardless, I wasn’t planning on repurchasing. However, since I’ve got more of the stuff now, I’ll just keep using it until it’s gone because I’m making an effort to use up my beauty products before I buy more of them.

Cocoa Butter Mother’s Land & Sea Detoxifying Mud Masque (FULL SIZE 2 oz $18)

I was intrigued by this product because I thought it was going to be an actual mud mask! Turns out, it’s a powder that you add water to and then applies to your face. I figure it’ll be a bit of a mess my first time using it, so it’s going to get it’s own separate post in the near future when I’ve used it a couple times. It smells nice and minty which is very relaxing for a mask.

Manna Kadar Lash Extending Primer (Deluxe Sixe .14 oz, Full Size $24)

I’ve never really seen the point of lash primers, mainly because I’m naturally hairy so I have long, fairly thick lashes already. However, I do have an issue with mine sticking together and looking gross, so I’m thinking I may just ditch this product and use the wand as a spoolie. #Multitasking

Kuvit Handmade EyeShadow in Corazon (FULL SIZE .125 oz $8)

I love this eyeshadow! I don’t own too many singles because I think you’ll always get more bang for your buck with a palette. That said, I don’t own any red eyeshadows, and this one is beautiful! The pigmentation is amazing for a handmade product. It is VERY soft, however, and I had trouble removing it from it’s packaging without fall out everywhere. I think it’ll be great for blending and I can’t wait to pair it with some of my other shadows.

ONYX BOX TOTAL VALUE: $72.79

That’s almost 3 times the value of paying for one box! I really enjoyed the ONYX Box experience, and I think that as it grows, more people of color are going to be able to enjoy this box on a widespread scale. The value is pretty good for a subscription box, and on a student budget, I could stand to part with $25 a month to continue my subscription. Want to try out ONYX for yourself? Use the promo code DYMOND, and you can get your first ONYX box PLUS an editor curated box. That’s TWO boxes for the price of one! Thanks again to ONYX for sending me the box for review!

Until next time,
