A Mini Ulta Haul and a Lesson in Rewards Programs

This has probably been the best birthday rewards points wise, since I started actively couponing. I will forever recommend Ulta’s rewards program over Sephora’s because 1) Your points add up to money values, NOT specific products Sephora says you can get, 2) Your rewards are redeemable on anything and everything in the store, 3) Ulta carries drugstore brands as well as prestige brands which makes it easier for smaller purchases to add up to huge rewards! That coupled with the fact that my new house is 5 minutes away from the the nearest Ulta, and I say I’ve got a win win situation. So here’s the breakdown. Many of you may have seen this photo on my Instagram or Snapchat.

Yes, that is 2 free mascaras and a $16 discount on some Butter London lipstick that you see. The best part is, it’s so easy to take advantge of these rewards. The coupon for a free deluxe They’re Real! mascara from Benefit came in this month’s catalogue that I recieve just for being a part of the ULTAmate program. I also get a free birthday gift each year for being in the program. This year it was a sample of Urban Decay’s Perversion mascara ( which was way better than last year’s CK One disaster). Then, I had accumulated over 300 rewards points in the last year for shopping at Ulta, and they were set to expire at the end of the month. Soooo, I grabbed Butter London’s Lippy in La Moss (discounted to $10 thanks to Ulta’s 21 Days of Beauty) and then took another $8 off with my points.

All of this made it my quickest trip in and out of Ulta, in just 14 minutes flat. Wonderful, no? Well it didn’t end there.

Another perk of the program is that I get 2x the points during my birthmonth and 5x the points during my anniversary week of joining the program. Get this. I signed up for the program during my birthmonth. So if you play your cards right, during one week of the year, you’re guaranteed 7x the points on anything you buy in the WHOLE STORE. And that includes trips to the Ulta Salon and Nail Bar (and Benefit Brow Bar in some locations). So if you go and get a nice wash and style which retails for $37, you can earn 259 points in one go (which is what I ended up doing 🙂 Thats $8 off anything in the store with some points left over.

Another cool tactic is to watch out for special events they’re holding. The dates will usually appear in the catalogue the month that they’re happening. For instance, over the summer, I got a wash and blowout at the Salon for just $10 since they were promoting the new Living Proof Frizz Free product line. I got a steep discount and a coupon for $10 off anything Living Proof which I eventually used to grab a full size of their Instant Repair cream, and that purchase came with another bag of Living Proof samples!

Lastly, when all else fails, just wait for it. It will eventually go on sale if you just wait and wait and wait. As much as I love makeup, I cannot justify paying  $20 for it. Thus began my dillema of the Smashbox Full Exposure mascara. I used every drop of every sample I’ve owned of that stuff, but I just couldn’t bring myself to pay for a full sized one! Again, 21 Days of Beauty came ro the rescue! 50% off, marking it down to $10. Plus, everything Smashbox branded was given 5x the points that day, and it was still during my birthmonth (although sadly, not my anniversary week). 70 more points right there. So my total amount of points is up to 352, 350 of which are redeemable for $11 off anything in the store.

Absolutely mindblowing. Best part is, these points won’t expire for an entire year (unless I go Platinum which is a totally different post) which means I’ve got plenty of time to save up for something extraordinary. It’s the little things in life right?

Happy Shopping!
